Function: Listening to informal conversations with slang and creating conversations

OBJECTIVES
 Students will practice in a group or with a partner using the set of slang words with 80%
accuracy.
 Students will create a short conversation with a group or partner using some of the
learned slang with 80% accuracy.
 Students will present to the class their conversations with the accurate intonation with
80% accuracy.

RATIONALE

Formal language is important depending on the situation. Most of the time, many English
speakers use informal language to speak to family, friends, co-workers (outside and sometimes
inside of work), etc. It’s important for students to practice and listen to informal speech because it
will increase their fluency in the target language and build better relations with native speakers.

1. Warm-up (2 mins):

 Homework Review: “I gave you an assignment to find the definition of all the
listed words, let’s review them."
o One by one, lets ss say the definitions
o PPT of Real definitions of all the words
o Looks over certain words that are difficult to understand: Compressing

2. Presentation (5 min):

 .PPT slide on Slang words


o Why are they useful? When do we use them?
 Examples of usage of these slang words
 Let’s ss read some examples

3. Practice 1 (3 min)

 Pair/group work  write one sentence for each slang


 Comprehension check
 Allows students to write one sentence per slang (according to their paper)
 Ss presents it in class

4. Presentation II (7 min):

 “You guys will be listening to a dialogue that I will repeat twice.”


 “First, let’s look over the questions for the dialogue. You’ll need a piece of paper
and pen or pencil to take notes.”
o Identify the slang in the dialogue.
o Summarize the dialogue – What are these two character conversing about?
o What is the tone of the dialogue? – are they happy? Frustrated? Sad? Is it a
combination of emotions? What emotions?
 Ss listens to an informal dialogue.

 T repeats twice (one slower speed then regular speed)
 T goes over the Q’s

7. Production (Use) (8 min):

 Ss pairs or group up to create their own short dialogue using the slang words.
o T will provide each group or pair with scenarios.
 After about 5 mins, ss will present with their groups or pair their dialogue.
(“Remember to use appropriate tones”)

8. Wrap-up (2 min):

 Ask ss “What slangs did we learn today?”

o When do we use them?

Create a dialogue with the scenario given using the slang phrases/words.

Scenario 1:
You and your friends are at a pool party. The party is getting so lit (crazy). Someone just
did a triple flip dive into the pool (so sick). One of you wants to bail (leave) because
he/she is hungry.

Scenario 2:
You and your friend(s) want to hang out. Describe where you guys are going to go, what
to eat, and what to do.

Scenario 3:
You and your friends are talking about each other’s crush at work. Your boss comes in
and tells you guys to get back to work. One of you tells him/her to chill. One of you
