CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Computers and software have come a long way since the first
digital computers were created. Early computers used a text mode,
command-line style operating system which requires technical expertise.
It was eventually developed into the graphical interface which is more
user and consumer friendly. Then the Internet and the world wide web
came which enables people to exchange information regardless of
geographical limitations. These changes affected our world a great deal.

Today people use their computers and smart devices to access

different websites on the internet to socialize, shop and communicate in
the comfort of their home. This lead to an increase in the demand of
highly accessible websites which businesses, governments and other
institutions took advantage. They used the world wide web to improve
advertising effectiveness, save money in printing information and
distribution costs through online brochures or news and improving
productivity.

In Education, schools across the world took advantage of the

benefits of websites. An effective school website, will have an instant
online brochure. The administrators of the school would not need to
worry about print or TV ads to promote the school. And there would be
no need to print materials, announcements and report of grades for
parents and other members of the school community. This saves money,
time, effort, and paper. Through an effective school website, parents,
alumni, and other visitors could access salient information about the
school from anywhere, anytime, even beyond office hours, as long as
there is an internet connection.

1
Most Colleges and schools here in the Philippines also took this
advantage, most of the them have an online grade viewing/inquiry
system. Student can inquire or view their grades through a computer or
smart device that is connected to the internet.

Background of the Study

The managerial problems associated with collecting, safekeeping

distributing grades tend to increase. This especially true when teachers
and offices like the registrar uses the manual managing of grades.

Grading systems are designed to provide incentives motivation for

achievement and assist in identifying problem areas of a student. It is
the most commonly used means of analyzing student performance, talent
and skills. Student’s grades are vital information needed in advancing to
the next year level and its accuracy is very important. .But managerial
problems associated with collecting, safekeeping distributing grades tend
to increase. This especially true when teachers and offices like the
registrar uses the manual managing of grades.

Manual distribution of class cards is costly. Another impact of

manual systems is on service. Student queries can be difficult to respond
to as information is stored in different storage and may require a lot of
time finding it before being able to respond.

This research study attempts to develop a Web-Based Grade

Inquiry System that may minimize the manual task of the office of the
registrar. Another feature is the automatic importing of grades from the
teacher’s class record and printing it, unlike the current system wherein
they need to write everything and present everything in person.

Purpose and Description of the Study

This Project entitled The La Salette of Roxas College (College

Department) Grades Viewing focusesSystem focuses mainly on keeping

student in track of their grades and subjects. Another functionality of
this project is to display announcements like meeting or news. This web
application can be visited anywhere and anytime as long as the
computers or smart mobile devicess are connected to the internet. The
users, of this web application will be given a built-in account created by
the administrator, but they will still be needing to change their log-in
information for security.

Paradigm of the Study

Project objective

General objective

To be able to develop an Web-Based Grade Inquiry System for Grades

Distribution for La Salette of Roxas College (college department) that will
automatically distribute it to the clients. To improve communication to
the school community.

Specific objective

 To reduce the time and effort of the students and the registrar in
issuance of grades.
 To create a user-friendly grades distribution and inquiry,
information and news dissemination System.
 To Improve communications to the school community using,
inquiry of system, announcement and news post in the website.

4
Statement of the problem

The La Salette of Roxas College does not have a website or an

online grades distribution system. Instead The researchers attempt to
design and develop a web-based grade inquiry system which will enhance
process the of current and manual system of the La Salette of Roxas
College by minimizing the tedious process and cost. It seeks to answer
the following questions.

1. What is the present status of the office of the registrar in terms of

collecting and distributing the grades of the students.
2. How would the proposed website be designed, developed, deployed
and tested.
3. Is there a Significance in using the proposed system?
Is there a Significant difference between the proposed and existing
system?
The grade will directly encode in the online system by the
instructors or the registrar. Students can also view their grades
anywhere and anytime using the internet.

Scope and Delimitations of the Project

This Project entitled The La Salette of Roxas College (College

Department) Grades Viewing System main function is to keep student in
track of their grades and disseminate updates, announcements,
information and news of the school. the web-application can also adapt
to any platforms, it can be accessed through computers, laptops and
smart mobile devices like smart phones and tablets connected to
internet.

Th proposed project also has limitations, for the grades to be

viewed online, the grade encoding process will rely on internet
connection. The system will not perform calculations. The system is not
reliable of human error, if the instructor submitted wrong grades of
student, the online system cannot and will not respond to correct that

5
mistake. The students also cannot print grades, only the users and
administrators can.GENERAL STATEMENT

The La Salette of Roxas College, Inc. uses the manual encoding,

submission, and distribution of student’s grades. How will the
proponents develop an Online Grades and distribution, that can display
and compute the grades of the student online?

Limitation

The grade encoding process relies on Internet connection.

If the instructor submitted wrong grades of student, the online system is
