UNDER THE SKIN

UNDER THE SKIN By Yonatan Calderon

Under the Skin tells one of the lesser-known stories of the

Second World War. The play depicts the love affair
between Nazi officer Anneliese Kohlmann and one of her
female Jewish prisoners in Neuengamme Concentration
Camp.  The play is based on the Belsen trial protocol of
Kohlmann, and on Holocaust survivors’ testimonies. It
alternates between two time periods to tell the timeless
story of a Holocaust survivor haunted by the ghosts of her
past.

THE PLAY
'Under the Skin' was originally produced in Tel Aviv,
where it ran for two years and was critically acclaimed
by some of Israel’s major newspapers. The play was
translated into Russian and represented Israel at the
MoldFest International Theatre Festival in Moldova. In
November the play will be performed as a rehearsed
reading in Vienna.

THE PRODUCTION
The English version of Under The Skin was produced
by Tik-sho-ret Theatre Company and had its debut
performance this summer as part of The Women and
War Festival in July. Following that, the production
ran for two nights at the Etcetera Theatre as part of
Camden Fringe Festival.

UNDER THE SKIN
ARTISTIC VISION
This production uses mixed styles of naturalism alongside
Brechtian alienation and elements of physical theatre. These
elements help to unfold the complex emotional journey that
the characters go through in one of the darkest times in
human history.

The play alternates between two periods of time. The first is

in 1991 during the first Gulf war in Tel Aviv, Israel and the
second is during WW2 in a labour camp in Germany, creating
artistic parallels between past and present.

All three actresses play various roles.

Adi Loya plays both the older Charlotte, the Jewish
holocaust survivor and the Nazi officer during WW2. This role
reversal highlights questions about good, evil, and what’s in
between.
The younger version of the Charlotte the Jewish prisoner is
played by Natasha Lancley, who also portrays Kirsten, a
German journalist posted in Tel Aviv reporting of the Gulf
war.

The third actress –Batel Israel –  portrays various characters

including another Jewish camp prisoner, a Nazi doctor and a
cabaret host. She also portrays the narrator of the show the
ghost who haunts the Jewish survivor.
The young Jewish prisoner is a ballet dancer; hence the show
also uses ballet dancing to add physicality element to the
storytelling.

Under the Skin was received warmly and celebrated by

audiences in its short run. This all female cast tells a story
that centres on women’s sexuality and highlights one of the
lesser-known stories of WW2.
This story is powerful, important and deserves to be seen by

TIK-SHO-RET
THEATRE COMPANY
Tik-sho-ret was established in 2005 by Ariella
Eshed. After some years of directing and
presenting Israeli and Jewish theatre in the UK
and creating projects around communication and
cultural exchange, Tik-sho-ret was established as
an umbrella to all these projects.

Tik-sho-ret (in Hebrew “communication”) aims to:

▪ Promotes Israeli and Jewish theatre in the UK
▪ Encourage collaborations through a cultural and artistic exchange.
▪ Create educational and community-based projects around themes of communication
and co-existence.

Some of the projects we were involved with:

New writing from Israel: extracts from five plays were presented by a team of 25 actors, five
directors and the five Israeli writers.
One of these plays - 5 Kilo Sugar, was then produced and performed in Brighton fringe, The
Tristan Bates Theatre, the Etcetera Theatre, JW3 and Edinburgh Fringe.
At The Hampstead Theatre, we hosted a season of Israeli play-readings followed by
discussions concerning the themes of the plays. One of these plays - Yaakobi and Leidnetal
by Hanoch Levin, was then produced and performed in Soho Theatre and for had a full run
at The Oval House.
To date, Tik-sho-ret has produced and given a platform to many Israeli plays, both classical
and contemporary. These productions would never have been brought to the UK otherwise
performed as a full production in Soho Theatre and for an entire run at the Oval House.
