 Start Time: 8:20am, End Time: 2:00pm

Mrs. Nate has no students until 9 a.m. on Thursdays so she starts her work day by catching up on
any paperwork she needs to do.

Group 1: Math-

She went over yesterday what they were supposed to do for Lesson 49 so she is letting them
complete the work in their workbook at their own pace. They write their work in a notebook that is
labeled Math and has their name on it. If they have any questions they are invited to ask. There are
bolded words in the teacher handbook which indicates a new idea that needs to be taught directly to
the students. With this group, because they are understanding everything up to this point, Mrs. Nate
skips some of the review sections and lets the students do independent work so they are still reviewing
but she doesn’t need to walk them through step-by-step. When they complete their workbook
assignment they do the lesson problems from the textbook in their notebooks. For one student you
have to read the word problems aloud so he can write his answers down; in this case, reading would be
an access skill. Mrs. Nate corrects the students’ work as they finish and allows them to redo any
problems they missed.

Group 2: Reading-

These students use a book called Decoding Strategies that is like Reading Mastery but it allows
them to move through the curriculum at a faster pace. Each student is going to use an iPad to work on
some testing. Two of the students will work on fluency where they read a passage aloud three times and
record the score with the least amount of errors. For the recordings they put their name, lesson
number, and the number reading. So, if I was doing my second reading in lesson 4 I would write “Aspen
4-2”. The other student is working on a DAZE test. For a DAZE test the student reads the passage that is
given and choose one out of three words. They choose the one that makes the most sense and their
score is recorded. Once the recordings are finished, they answer the comprehension questions from
their workbooks.

Group 3: Math-

Mrs. Nate displays work on the board according to what’s in the teacher book.

4 -- -- -- -- …counting by 4s

24 -- -- -- -- …counting by 4s

She reminds them that the ending numbers in each row/column will be the same.

**A student is having behavior issues because he is upset that he missed recess yesterday. He
was supposed to sit in the office for recess and says he stood on the wall the whole time instead but
yesterday he said he forgot to sit out. He’s upset and laying on the floor distracting the class. He would
not choose from the choices Mrs. Nate give him of doing deep breathing or going to the other table so
she had to call the office and someone is coming to get him. One thing that I think could have gone
differently is that she could have tried to deescalate the situation by taking him into the hall to talk to
him or could have ignored his behavior. I think that he would have calmed down a lot faster if no one
had been called from the office. The other students are being taken to the gym for the rest of the class
period where they will have free choice. The student is trying to leave the classroom and now they are
talking about how he came in yesterday and said that he forgot to miss recess. He is not allowed to
leave the classroom until he is calm; he keeps arguing and saying that it is not fair and that the teacher is
the most unfair teacher ever and that he wants to blow it up. He is reminded that he needs to keep his
hands and feet to himself while he goes to the office. One thing that seems to work for him is asking him
if he wants to get out of the classroom. There’s one lady he will normally go with, but he wouldn’t today
because he had already reached his breaking point and was being defiant.

The students are now opening their independent workbooks while Mrs. Nate contacts the who
misbehaved parent. I jumped in and finished the lesson for about 10 minutes.

Group 4: Reading-

Mrs. Nate had to leave the classroom, so I am making sure that the students are doing their
fluency readings with the iPad. I helped the student count her errors and record her scores accordingly.
Mrs. Nate took over again and is going through sounds that the student writes in her workbook. Next
sound is “a” (students writes), what sound? (student answers). Padded—does this have one or two
consonants in-between the vowels? The book isn’t always specific enough, so Mrs. Nate helps them
learn about the spelling rules from a different textbook. The spelling lessons teach things like doubling
consonants, when a letter says its name, and when to add an ‘e’ to the end of a word. Mrs. Nate is
testing a student by having her read to her. The score is recorded in a computer program where you can
mark errors and the last word read. There is a timer on the side for 1 minute that tells you when to have
the student stop reading.

Group 5: Writing-

We have a student who carries a clipboard throughout the day where we keep track of how long
he takes to get from class to class, if he is on task, and if he argued or whined. There are also notes made
about his behavior on the chart. The chart was made especially for him to help him stay on task and keep
the team informed about his behavior.

On Task No arguing/whining On Time

**following is circled for each category above

I -- Independent

P-- Prompted

N-- Not done, more than 5 prompts, refusal, etc.

Point to North, South, East, and West in workbook. “Which direction is to her right?”, etc.

“The girl walks three squares to the North. Make an X where she lands. Now she walks four squares to the
West. Make an X. She goes two squares to the North. Make an X. Count where you start moving, not
where she starts. She goes five squares to the East. Make an X. What did she end up at?”

Group 6: Written Language-

No group today because Firefighters came to read to certain grade levels.

Group 7: Written Language-

Some of the students so writing prompts on the computer and some of them do their writing
prompts with paper and a pencil. They get 1 minute to think and 3 minutes to write. One of the students
is doing work from the textbook and he types it up on Google Drive so it can be easily corrected by Mrs.
Nate.

Group 8: Reading-

This group of students is doing comprehension out of the Reading Mastery book. They are working
on lesson 18 in their workbooks. “Touch the paragraph in Part D. This paragraph has some problems.
Follow along as I read it.” Students read in their head and answer questions.

Group 9: Reading-

Mrs. Nate is using this time to have students read to her while she fills out their mistakes online.
They have one minute to complete the task.
