Sigils from the Arabic Picatrix

Sigils from the Arabic Picatrix

T he Picatrix or Ghayat al Hakim, the “Aim

of the Wise” is the most famous book
of astrological magic of the Middle Ages and
Renaissance. Attributed to the Arabic author
Al-Majriti, the Picatrix was composed, according
to the Arabic translation that follows, between
AD 954 and 959. It was compiled, according
to the preamble, from 200 previous works of
magic, astrology and philosophy. Composed
in Andalusia, Islamic Spain, it was translated
into Castilian and then Latin in AD 1256 at the
court of Alphonso the Wise of Castile.
Picatrix was widely used and was a a
key source for Renaissance mages like Cornelius
Agrippa and Marsilio Ficino. The version they
used, of course, was in Latin. The Latin version
is, as we have found from personal experience
highly effective, but certainly does contain
significant differences from the Arabic version,
or rather versions, because many different manuscripts circulated, both in Arabic and in Latin.
We have found the Latin sigils to be both usable and effective, but again it is useful to have this
selection of Arabic sigils available, not because they are “better” but because it is useful to be able to
work with a wide variety of variants. The Arabic sigils are from the Rittner and Plessner German
translation of the Arabic Picatrix, published by the Warburg Institute in 1962. I have cross referenced
the Arabic sigils, when possible, with the corresponding Latin Picatrix sigils including the Book and
Chapter, with pages references to our complete English translation of the Picatrix, either in the Liber
Atratus, “LA” or Liber Viridis “LV” editions.
