QUESTION NO. 01 (15 marks)

The complexity of arrivals and departures of planes at an airport is such that computer simulation is often
used to model the ‘‘ideal’’ conditions. For a certain airport with three runways, it is known that in the
ideal setting the following are the probabilities that the individual runways are accessed by a randomly
arriving commercial jet:
Runway 1: p1 = 3/9 = 0.2222 (or 33.33%)
Runway 2: p2 = 2/5 = 0.40 (or 40%)
Runway 3: p3 = 3/11 = 0.2727 (or 27.27 %)

What is the probability that 6 randomly arriving airplanes are distributed in the following fashion?
Runway 1: 3 airplanes
Runway 2: 4 airplanes
Runway 3: 2 airplanes
QUESTION NO. 02 (3+5+3+4+3+2= 20 marks)

Define and explain in your own words.

1. Continuous Uniform Distribution

2. Normal distribution

3. Trimmed Mean

4. Sampling Distribution

5. State and give equation of either “Central Limit Theorem” OR “Chebyshev’s Theorem”
6. Interval Estimate

QUESTION NO. 03 (15 marks)

At the “Quality Assurance and Testing Department” of a Vernier Calliper, a precision instrument
manufacturing company the components are checked if they comply with set standards or not. And those
which do not are rejected. The specification is to check the zero-error. If it complies with 1.7 ± e. The mean
is 1.7 in the normally distributed measurements with a standard deviation of 0.3. Find the value of error
e, so that the specification will cover 95% of the Vernier callipers.

QUESTION NO. 04 (15 marks)

Find a 95% C.I estimating the mean percentages of GPA obtained by sophomore students at an ABC
university. Take up a sample size of 100 from the student body of 5557, in which 1546 are sophomores.
(Assume µ = 67.45 and σ 2.93 in the percentage converted from GPA).
QUESTION NO. 05 (20 marks)

The article “Macro invertebrate Community Structure as an indicator of Acid Mine Pollution” is published
in the journal of Environmental Pollution Reports on an investigation undertaken in Cane Creek Alabama,
to determine the relationship between selected physiochemical parameters and different measures of
macro invertebrate community structure. One facet of the investigation was an evaluation of the
effectiveness of a numerical species diversity index to indicate aquatic degradation due to acid mine
drainage. Conceptually, a high index of macro invertebrate species diversity should indicate an unstressed
aquatic system, while a low diversity index should indicate a stressed aquatic system. Two independent
sampling stations were chosen for this study, one located downstream from the acid mine discharge point
and one located upstream. For 12 monthly samples collected at the downstream station, the species
diversity index had a mean value X1 = 3.11 and a standard deviation s1 = 0.771, while 10 monthly samples
collected at the upstream station had a mean index value X 2 = 2.04 and a standard deviation s2 = 0.448.
Find a 90% confidence interval for the difference between the population means for the two locations,
assuming that the populations are approximately normally distributed with equal variance.
QUESTION NO. 06 (15 marks)

In modern medicine, in a “humpty-dumpty” cardio-auto transplantation surgery the morbidity rate is 40%.
After the updation in the machines involved the survival rate soured to 70% showing much improved
effectiveness, when it was proceeded to a random sample of 100 adults in the cardiothoracic
experimentation administration in Seattle Grace Hospital. Is this sufficient evidence to conclude that the
new machines used are superior to one previously and commonly used? Use a 0.05 level of significance.
