The Understanding of Drafting and Design

Today, we don’t walk into a building and ask ourselves ow the building was constructed

and who designed it. Those questions do not come across our minds because we may not be a

drafter and designer we don’t tend to think that way. Drafters, back in 2000 B.C had a different

way of thinking than the drafters that we have now (Autodesk 1). In our world we are

surrounded, we are surrounded by so many types of engineers that make our world come

together and run the way it does. It takes full amounts of skills to make what we see every day

driving to work. The engineers that help with the architectural parts are only part of the

engineering list that continues to grow. We have engineers who can help with about anything

and, or they make products that can be helpful to those who are in the same pathway of the

engineering community. There are biomedical engineers who focus on working with medicine

and partners with nurses and doctors (Truity 1).” There are also Electrical Engineers who focus

more on the aspects of testing certain electrical circuits and certain engine run equipment. There

are also some engineers who will focus more on the design aspects of the architecture process.

The focus on making sure that the layout is drawn to scale and that it is legible. “Designers also

make the models of what is being built to see what they will be working with soon of building

(Study 1).” Drafting and design focuses on the design process from a finished plan using

different aspects of drafting and design to construct a building and make them successfully

functional. It is amazing how well these buildings were constructed.

Before we came up with the new and improved technology that we use today to draft and

design our buildings, we had had nothing but a man who came up with a world changing idea to

help drafters do their job. Even before that, drafters and designers would to their jobs that needed

to be done on paper, not only that but also by hand. They didn’t have the technological advances

and advantages that we have today. Buildings back in 2000 B.C. where seen differently back

then as they are now in the 20th century (Autodesk). As far back as we can cover, it has been said

and proven by official Autodesk supervisors that “The earliest recorded history of engineering

drafting was 2000 B.C. of which we have fossilized aerial view plan of a Babylonian Castle”

(Autodesk). Back in B.C. there weren’t such things are technological equipment helping drafters

and designers and build their buildings. What drafters and designers would have to use would be

what was called a sketchpad. The sketchpad was a program that was designed to help drafters do

their layouts and can view their layouts. (Autodesk 1). “The modern age of engineering was

ushered back in 1963 when a man named Ivan Sutherland invented a little program called

sketchpad. This was the first graphically interfaced CAD program.” (Autodesk 2). The sketchpad

feature allowed drafters to see the comings of the building and see the skeleton being put

together to make a whole body soon to be viewed and well appreciated (Autodesk). Not only was

seeing the layout important to the drafters but also communication played a big role back when

they first started drafting and it still play a huge role in today’s drafters mind. Communication is

important to drafters once they know what they want to build and what they want work on, it is

important to communicate with each other to see that others think and if the other ideas on how

to start the project and if there is a different and better way to do things to make the building look

better and make it easier to accomplish. If there no sense of communication between them,

something could possibly go wrong. Drafting isn’t the only occupation where communication
Bennett 3

plays a big role, but it is one of the main jobs that requires it. Communication and reliability with

your coworkers. It goes for the two occupation that are is relation to each other. With one there

could not be the other. Drafting and Design are two major occupations that need the

communication responsibility of workers and coworkers.

Back in the 1900s, drafters didn’t know much of their own resources that they could use.

They knew what they needed to know for what job they were working on and the job they

needed to do. The drafters didn’t know what would be coming into the new century of our

technological advances that we have today. Back when drafting started, drafters had to do their

drafting and drawings on paper and by hand. Drawing by hand and on paper is still done today

but now us other choices unlike back then when they only had one choice.

With the drawings on paper, it would help them see what measurements they needed to

have to finish constructing the building. While we still have that today, we now can make models

of the buildings so the drafters can get an idea of what it would most likely look soon. Typically,

there are apps that help drafters make the models and make it possible. During a period, they

used different systems to help with the communication needed between the drafters.

They also used what was and is still called scalar drawings to help them communicate

with each other. “13 century scalar drawings emerged” (Luckett). “Scalar drawings are used to

describe one dimensional quantities that is, quantities require one number to completely describe

it.” (Webphysics). Triadic drawings are just as important to drafters when it comes to seeing

things in full perspective. A new program emerged in 1980. “In 1980 CAD popularity put the

hand drafting at the norm to where people tend to use CAD more but the communication

between drafters still didn’t change” (Luckett). No matter what new design and program there is,

communication between drafters is very important and well appreciated. Now in our society we
Bennett 4

now have over 100 programs that helps drafters with their job. It helps to make their job easier

and it helps them have a better understanding of what they are in visioning for the building and

the project they are working on. Not only does it help drafters, but it also helps the designers who

work with the drafters to make sure everything is designed correctly and that everything is drawn

to scale and that each drawing can be viewed correctly without any confusion.

Now that we have focused on the history and the objectives of the drafting history and

people. It is now important to know the tools that they use to make their jobs easier. In the

drafting industry there are five conceptive tools that’s they use daily. If these tools weren’t used,

drafters would have a hard time trying to communicate and reading each blue print. The tools

that the drafters use is the following: drafting scales, T-Square, Irregular Curves templates and

drawings boards. A T-Square is used when you want to measure your right angles perfectly. A T-

Square is made from a long piece of wood that is attached vertically to the middle of a giant ruler

that is placed horizontally along the vertical piece of wood. (Encyclopedia Aedia). Without the

T-Square the drawing lines would not be straight, and the angles would not be correct. Another

tool that drafters use that is super user friendly is drawing boards. Drawing boards can be very

useful when you are and are not in office to work on them. When you are not in, drawings are

made smaller, so they can be portable, but they still serve their purpose. The board is a square

piece of wood to draw on. Typically, they board has a green plastic pieced glued onto the board

to make your drawings smoother and not a grainy as they would be on the wood. The board is

made to keep your paper stationary once you tape it down. Usually, it has a long rectangular

board that is attached to the board with wire. The rectangular board moves up and down the

drawing board. It helps the drawing to be a lot smoother. It also helps you draw your lines

perfectly if the board is attached correctly, and it is straight. There are many more tools that
Bennett 5

drafters use daily not only to make their job easier but to make their drawings more critical and

more comprehensive. The last tool of many that drafters use is the Irregular Curves template.

The template does exactly what it is the name. It helps drafters draw irregular curves that cannot

be drawn with just a pencil and just estimating where it needs to be placed and how it needs to be

drawn. They must find the radius of the curves first and then place it where they need it due to

the radius of the curve. There are many more other tools that drafters use to make their job as a

drafter easier but also fun. Drafters need these tools. Without the tools that drafters use back

then and now in our century. Their job would be so much harder and not only that but also harder

to understand when it comes to communicating with the designers and builders about what they

will building.

Drafters aren’t the only the that we have in this world that makes our buildings stand.

We need people to design the building and use graphic to see what the buildings will look like.

We tend to have many engineers for different jobs in the industries. These two occupations are

one of the many that tend to work together to make the building and to design it. Without these

the occupation being put together. One could not function without the other occupation. There

are different types of designers are in the designing occupation. In designing, there are the

following designers: Interior Designers, Graphic Designers, Wed Designers and Motion Graphic

Designers. Each designer has a certain activity that they do that pertains to their job. The jobs

that they do makes the title of the designer job make more sense to the fact that the objectives

they are covering are consistent with their own description of their own occupation.
Bennett 6

Interior designer is one of the most important people when it comes to helping someone

design their building. Not only have that but deigned the inside of the building. It is very

important that those people understand what the owner of the building wants to be put inside

their building and for the interior designer to make that happen. “Interior designers transform

spaces to make them more functional, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing. They select furniture,

accessories, paint, lighting, fabrics, and other elements based on the space and their client’s

needs and style preferences. Many designers create drawings or diagrams of the layout or floor

plan of the space with programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.” (Global 3). These increment details

may not seem important to the usual person but to interior designers they are more important

than what we expect. These details could have the potential hiring back up. Meaning that if the

interior designer does a good job at designing the place that they were assigned. They have a

better chance at getting hired again and getting a bigger opportunity to design a bigger place and

a more important place. What they do is very important to them and is taken very. Graphic

Designers are just as important is the engineering industry. Graphic designers are the ones that

are technological and tend to work more on the computer and work digitally. “The world of the

motion graphics designer evolves frame by frame. Whether they’re creating an explainer video

or the opening title sequence of a movie, motion graphics designers bring movement to

otherwise static images, text, illustrations, and more.” (Global 4).

Bennett 7

Drafting and design focuses on the design process from a finished plan using different

aspects of drafting and design to construct a building and make them successfully functional. It is

amazing how well these buildings were constructed. All designers are very important to this

world and this century. The many types of designers in this world as important as the drafters in

this world. Interior designer is one of the most important people when it comes to helping

someone design their building. Not only have that but deigned the inside of the building. Graphic

designers are the ones that are technological and tend to work more on the computer and work

digitally. Not only are people important to this occupation but also the tools are as important as

the people working on the job. The main important that is used in both jobs is a T-Square. A T-

Square is used when you want to measure your right angles perfectly. A T-Square is made from a

long piece of wood that is attached vertically to the middle of a giant ruler that is placed

horizontally along the vertical piece of wood. With all the tools that they use and all the

information that is being used to make the project is very important to make sure that each tool

and information is used correctly. With the information that was given, all these product of

drafting and design is very important. One can’t work without the other. Each tool is also

needed, and it never put aside. If there is no tool aside there is no person that is being put aside.

Each person is just as important to this occupation and they need to be.
