The Striped Tulips
Once upon a time there was a good old woman
who lived in a little house. She had in her
garden a bed of beautiful striped tulips.
One night she was wakened by the sounds of
sweet singing and of babies laughing. She
looked out at the window. The sounds seemed
to come from the tulip bed, but she could see
nothing.
The next morning she walked among her
flowers, but there were no signs of any one
having been there the night before.
On the following night she was again wakened
by sweet singing and babies laughing. She rose
and stole softly through her garden. The moon
was shining brightly on the tulip bed, and the
flowers were swaying to and fro.
The old woman looked closely and she saw,
standing by each tulip, a little Fairy mother who
was crooning and rocking the flower like a
cradle, while in each tulip cup lay a little Fairy
baby laughing and playing.
The good old woman stole quietly back to her
house, and from that time on she never picked a
tulip, nor did she allow her neighbors to touch
the flowers.
The tulips grew daily brighter in color and larger
in size, and they gave out a delicious perfume
like that of roses. They began, too, to bloom all

de un lado para el otro.
La anciana miró más de cerca y vio, de pie junto
a cada tulipán, diminutas Hadas madres que
cantaban y balanceaban las flores como si
fueran cunas y en el hueco de cada tulipán
había un bebé de hadas riendo y jugueteando.
Sin hacer ruido, la buena anciana regresó a su
casa y, a partir de aquel momento, nunca cortó
un tulipán, ni les permitía a sus vecinos tocar las
flores.
Los tulipanes crecían cada día más brillantes en
color y más grandes en tamaño, y comenzaron
a desprender un delicioso perfume parecido al

mothers caressed their babies and rocked them
to sleep in the flower cups.
The day came when the good old woman died,
and the tulip bed was torn up by folks who did
not know about the Fairies, and parsley was
planted there instead of the flowers. But the
parsley withered, and so did all the other plants
in the garden, and from that time nothing would
grow there.
But the good old woman's grave grew beautiful,
for the Fairies sang above it, and kept it green –
while on the grave and all around it there sprang
up tulips, daffodils, and violets, and other lovely
flowers of spring.

Once upon a time there lived an unhappy young
girl. Her mother was dead and her father had
married a widow with two daughters. Her
stepmother didn't like her one little bit. All her
kind thoughts and loving touches were for her
own daughters. Nothing was too good for them
– dresses, shoes, delicious food, soft beds, and
every home comfort.
But, for the poor unhappy girl, there was nothing
at all. No dresses, only her stepsisters’ hand-

Hace mucho tiempo vivía una desdichada
muchacha. Su madre había muerto y su padre se

Su madrastra no la apreciaba para nada. Toda su
amabilidad y cariño era para sus hijas propias.
Nada les alcanzaba – vestidos, zapatos, comidas
deliciosas, cómodas camas y todas las
comodidades hogareñas.
Pero, para la tan desdichada muchacha nunca
había nada. Ningún vestido, sólo ropas usadas de
me-downs. No lovely dishes, nothing but scraps. sus hermanastras. Nada de comidas fabulosas,
No rest and no comfort. She had to work hard
all day. Only when evening came was she
allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the
cinders. That’s why everybody called her
Cinderella.
Cinderella used to spend long hours all alone
talking to the cat. The cat said, "Miaow", which
really meant, "Cheer up! You have something
neither of your stepsisters has and that is
beauty." It was quite true. Cinderella, even
dressed in old rags, was a lovely girl. While her
stepsisters, no matter how splendid and elegant
their clothes, were still clumsy, lumpy and ugly
and always would be.
One day, beautiful new dresses arrived at the
house. A ball was to be held at the palace and
the stepsisters were getting ready to go.
Cinderella didn't even dare ask if she could go
too. She knew very well what the answer would
be: "You? You're staying at home to wash the
dishes, scrub the floors and turn down the beds
for your stepsisters. They will come home tired
and very sleepy". Cinderella sighed, "Oh dear,
I'm so unhappy!". and the cat murmured,
"Miaow"..
Suddenly something amazing happened. As
Cinderella was sitting all alone, there was a
burst of light and a fairy appeared. "Don't be
alarmed, Cinderella",. said the fairy. "I know you
would love to go to the ball. And so you shall!".

tus hermanastras. Van a llegar cansadas y con

tan desdichada!", y el gato murmuraba, "Miau".
De pronto sucedió algo asombroso. Cuando
Cenicienta se encontraba sentada en soledad,
surgió un rayo luminoso y apareció un hada. "No
temas, Cenicienta", dijo el hada. "Sé cuánto te
gustaría ir al baile. ¡Y vas a ir!". "Cómo podría ir

The fairy smiled. With a flick of her magic wand
Cinderella found herself wearing the most
beautiful dress she had ever seen. "Now for
your coach", said the fairy. "A real lady would

pumpkin!". "Oh of course", said Cinderella,
rushing away. Then the fairy turned to the cat.
"You, bring me seven mice, and, remember they
must be alive!".

Cinderella soon returned with the pumpkin and
the cat with seven mice he had caught in the
cellar. With a flick of the magic wand the
pumpkin turned into a sparkling coach. Six of
the mice became white horses, while the
seventh mouse turned into a coachman in a
smart uniform and carrying a whip. Cinderella
could hardly believe her eyes.
But the fairy, above all things, told her not to
stay until after midnight. "If you stay one minute
longer, the coach will become a pumpkin again,
your horses and the coachman will become
mice, and your clothes will become just rags".
Cinderella promised her she would leave the
ball before midnight. And away she went full of
joy and happiness.

Pronto regresó Cenicienta con la calabaza y el
gato con siete ratas atrapadas en la bodega. Con
un toque de varita mágica la calabaza se
transformó en una fulgurante carroza. Seis de las
ratas se convirtieron en caballos blancos, mientras
que la séptima rata se transformó en un cochero
de elegante uniforme y rebenque. Cenicienta no
podía creer lo que estaba viendo.
Pero el hada le recomendó muy especialmente
regresar antes de la medianoche. "Si te quedas un
minuto más, tu carroza volverá a convertirse en
calabaza, tus caballos y el cochero en ratas, y tus
ropas volverán a ser harapos".
Cenicienta le prometió a su madrina que saldría
del baile antes de la medianoche. Y hacia allí
partió, llena de alegría y felicidad.
Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball until
she heard the first stroke of midnight. Suddenly,
she remembered the fairy's warning, and
without a word of goodbye she slipped from the
Prince's arms and ran down the steps. As she
ran she lost one of her slippers, but not for a
moment did she dream of stopping to pick it up.
If the last stroke of midnight were to sound, what
a disaster that would be! So out Cinderella fled
and vanished into the night.
The Prince, who was now madly in love with
her, picked up the slipper and said to his
ministers, “Go and search everywhere for the
girl whose foot this slipper fits. I will never be
content until I find her!”
So the ministers tried the slipper on the foot of
every girl in the land until only Cinderella was
left.
"That awful untidy girl simply cannot have been
at the ball",. snapped the stepmother. "Tell the
Prince he ought to marry one of my two
daughters! Can't you see how ugly Cinderella
is?". But, to everyone's amazement, the shoe
fitted perfectly.
Suddenly the fairy appeared and waved her
magic wand. In a flash, Cinderella appeared in a
splendid dress, shining with youth and beauty.
Her stepmother and stepsisters gaped at her in
amazement. Then the ministers said, "Come
with us Cinderella! The Prince is waiting for
you."
Cenicienta pasó un hermoso momento en el baile
hasta que escuchó la primera campanada de la
medianoche. De pronto, recordó la advertencia del
hada y, sin despedirse, se deslizó de los brazos
del Príncipe y corrió por las escaleras. Al correr
perdió uno de sus zapatos y ni por un instante se
le ocurrió reocogerlo. ¡Qué desastre habría
ocurrido si sonaba la última campanada de la
medianoche! Asi fue que Cenicienta huyó y

El Príncipe, perdidamente enamorado de ella,
recogió el zapato y le indicó a sus ministros.
"Salgan a buscar por todas partes a la muchacha
cuyo pie encaje en este zapato. ¡No seré feliz
hasta que la encuentre!".
Entonces los ministros probaron el zapato en
todas las muchachas de la aldea hasta que sólo
quedaba Cenicienta.
"Esa muchacha espantosa y desprolija no pudo
haber asistido al baile", estalló la madrastra.
"¡Díganle al Príncipe que debería casarse con una
de mis dos hijas! ¿No se dan cuenta lo fea que es
Cenicienta?". Pero ante el asombro de todo el
mundo, el zapato encajó a la perfección.
De pronto, apareció el hada y agitó su varita
mágica. En un segundo Cenicienta apareció con
un traje espléndido, brillando de juventiud y
belleza. Su madrastra y hermanastras miraban
boquiabiertas en total asombro. Entonces los
ministros dijeron, "¡Acompáñanos Cenicienta! El
Príncipe aguarda por ti!".
Then the ministers said, "Come with us
Cinderella! The Prince is waiting for you."
And so Cinderella married the Prince and lived
happily ever. As for the cat, he just said
"Miaow!"
The Selfish Giant

Every afternoon, as they were coming from
school, the children used to go and play in the
Giant's garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green
grass. Here and there over the grass stood
beautiful flowers like stars, and there were
twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke
out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and
in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on
the trees and sang so sweetly that the children
used to stop their games in order to listen to
them.
"How happy we are here!" they cried to each
other.
One day the Giant came back. He had been to
visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed
with him for seven years. After the seven years
were over he had said all that he had to say, for
his conversation was limited, and he determined
to return to his own castle. When he arrived he
saw the children playing in the garden.
"What are you doing here?" he cried in a very
gruff voice, and the children ran away. "My own

delicados capullos de color rosado y madreperla y
en otoño ofrecían deliciosos frutos. Los pájaros se
posaban en los árboles y cantaban tan
dulcemente que los niños interrumpían sus juegos
para escucharlos.
-¡Qué felices somos aquí! –se decían unos a
otros.
Un día, el Gigante regresó. Había ido a visitar a su
amigo, el ogro de Cornualles, con quien había
pasado siete años. Al cabo de siete años, ya no le
quedaba nada para decir porque su capacidad de
conversación era limitada, y decidió regresar a su
castillo. Cuando llegó, encontró a los niños
jugando en el jardín.
-¿Qué hacen aquí? –gritó con voz tremebunda. Y
los niños escaparon. -Mi jardín es sólo mío –
garden is my own garden," said the Giant; "any
one can understand that, and I will allow nobody
to play in it but myself."
So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a
notice-board.
TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED
He was a very selfish Giant.
The poor children had now nowhere to play.
They tried to play on the road, but the road was
very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did
not like it. They used to wander round the high
wall when their lessons were over, and talk
about the beautiful garden inside.
"How happy we were there," they said to each
other.
Then the Spring came, and all over the country
there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in
the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still winter.
The birds did not care to sing in it as there were
no children, and the trees forgot to blossom.
Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the
grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was
so sorry for the children that it slipped back into
the ground again, and went off to sleep. The
only people who were pleased were the Snow
and the Frost.
"Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried,
"so we will live here all the year round."
declaró el gigante-, recuérdenlo bien. Y no
permitiré que nadie juegue aquí excepto yo.
Entonces construyó un muro altísimo alrededor
del jardín y colocó un letrero:

demasiado polvo y tantas piedras afiladas que no
les gustó. Cuando terminaban las clases solían
pasear alrededor del alto muro y hablaban del
hermoso jardín que había detrás.
-¡Qué felices éramos allí! –se decían unos a otros.
Un día llegó la primavera y toda la región se
cubrió de capullos y pajaritos. Sólo en el jardín del
gigante egoísta seguía siendo invierno. Los
pájaros no querían cantar allí porque no había
niños y los árboles se olvidaron de florecer. Una
vez, una hermosa flor asomó la cabecita entre la
hierba, pero cuando vio el letrero sintió tanta pena
por los niños que volvió a esconderse en la tierra y
siguió durmiendo. Las únicas que estaban
encantadas eran la nieve y la escarcha.
-La primavera ha olvidado este jardín –
exclamaban-. Nos quedaremos a vivir aquí todo el
año.
The Snow covered up the grass with her great
white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees
silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay
with them, and he came. He was wrapped in
furs, and he roared all day about the garden,
and blew the chimney-pots down.
"This is a delightful spot," he said, "we must ask
the Hail on a visit."
So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he
rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most
of the slates, and then he ran round and round
the garden as fast as he could go. He was
dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.
"I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in
coming," said the Selfish Giant, as he sat at the
window and looked out at his cold white garden;
"I hope there will be a change in the weather."
But the Spring never came, nor the Summer.
The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden,
but to the Giant's garden she gave none. "He is
too selfish," she said. So it was always Winter
there, and the North Wind, and the Hail, and the
Frost, and the Snow danced about through the
trees.
One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed
when he heard some lovely music. It sounded
so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be
the King's musicians passing by. It was really
only a little linnet singing outside his window, but
it was so long since he had heard a bird sing in
his garden that it seemed to him to be the most

What did he see?
He saw a most wonderful sight. Through a little
hole in the wall the children had crept in, and
they were sitting in the branches of the trees. In
every tree that he could see there was a little
child. And the trees were so glad to have the
children back again that they had covered
themselves with blossoms, and were waving
their arms gently above the children's heads.
The birds were flying about and twittering with
delight, and the flowers were looking up through
the green grass and laughing.
It was a lovely scene, only in one corner it was
still winter. It was the farthest corner of the
garden, and in it was standing a little boy. He
was so small that he could not reach up to the
branches of the tree, and he was wandering all
round it, crying bitterly. The poor tree was still
quite covered with frost and snow, and the North
Wind was blowing and roaring above it. "Climb
up! little boy," said the Tree, and it bent its

¿Y qué vio?
Ante sus ojos apareció una vista extraordinaria.
Por un pequeño hueco en el muro los niños se
habían deslizado dentro del jardín y habían
trepado a los árboles. En cada árbol que
alcanzaba a ver había un niño sentado en una
rama. Y los árboles estaban tan contentos con
su regreso que se habían cubierto de flores y
agitaban sus ramas por sobre las cabezas de
los niños. El jardín se llenó de pájaros que
piaban jubilosamente. Las flores se asomaban
entre la hierba verde y reían.
Era una escena encantadora, sólo en un rincón
seguía siendo invierno. Era el lugar más
apartado del jardín y allí había un niñito. Era tan
pequeño que no podía alcanzar las ramas del
árbol y caminaba a su alrededor llorando
amargamente. El pobre árbol seguía cubierto de
nieve y escarcha y el viento del norte sacudía su
copa y rugía. -¡Trepa, niñito! –rogaba el árbol
mientras tendía sus ramas hacia él, pero el niño
era demasiado pequeño.

"How selfish I have been!" he said; "now I know
why the Spring would not come here. I will put
that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and
then I will knock down the wall, and my garden
shall be the children's playground for ever and
ever." He was really very sorry for what he had
done.
So he crept downstairs and opened the front
door quite softly, and went out into the garden.
But when the children saw him they were so
frightened that they all ran away, and the garden
became winter again. Only the little boy did not
run, for his eyes were so full of tears that he did
not see the Giant coming.
And the Giant stole up behind him and took him
gently in his hand, and put him up into the tree.
And the tree broke at once into blossom, and
the birds came and sang on it, and the little boy
stretched out his two arms and flung them round
the Giant's neck, and kissed him. And the other
children, when they saw that the Giant was not
wicked any longer, came running back, and with
them came the Spring.
"It is your garden now, little children," said the
Giant, and he took a great axe and knocked
down the wall. And when the people were going
to market at twelve o'clock they found the Giant

que no vio acercarse al gigante.
El gigante se deslizó por detrás del niño, lo alzó
suavemente y lo sentó en el árbol. En un
instante, el árbol se cubrió de flores y los
pájaros vinieron a cantar en sus ramas. El niño
extendió los bracitos, rodeó con ellos el cuello
del gigante y le dio un beso. Y cuando los otros
niños vieron que el gigante ya no quería
hacerles daño volvieron corriendo y con ellos
regresó la primavera.
-Desde ahora este jardín es para ustedes, niños
–les dijo el gigante. Luego tomó un hacha
enorme y derribó el muro. Y al mediodía,
cuando los habitantes del pueblo se dirigían al
mercado, vieron que el gigante jugaba con los

came to the Giant to bid him good-bye.
"But where is your little companion?" he said:

morrow," said the Giant. But the children said
that they did not know where he lived, and had
never seen him before; and the Giant felt very
sad.
Every afternoon, when school was over, the
children came and played with the Giant. But
the little boy whom the Giant loved was never
seen again. The Giant was very kind to all the
children, yet he longed for his first little friend,
and often spoke of him. "How I would like to see

Years went over, and the Giant grew very old
and feeble. He could not play about any more,
so he sat in a huge armchair, and watched the
children at their games, and admired his garden.
"I have many beautiful flowers," he said; "but the
children are the most beautiful flowers of all."
One winter morning he looked out of his window
as he was dressing. He did not hate the Winter

los niños iban a jugar con el gigante. Pero el
niñito a quien el gigante quería nunca volvió.
Aunque era muy amable con todos, el gigante
extrañaba a su primer amiguito y siempre
hablaba de él. -¡Cómo quisiera volver a verlo! –
solía decir.
Pasaron los años y el gigante se volvió viejo y
débil. Ya no podía jugar, pero se sentaba en un
gran sillón y contemplaba los juegos de los
niños mientras admiraba su jardín. -Tengo
muchas flores bellas –decía-, pero los niños son
las flores más bellas que existen.
Una mañana de invierno, el gigante miró por la
ventana mientras se vestía. Ya no odiaba al

Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder, and

Downstairs ran the Giant in great joy, and out
into the garden. He hastened across the grass,
and came near to the child. And when he came
quite close his face grew red with anger, and he
said, "Who hath dared to wound thee?" For on
the palms of the child's hands were the prints of
two nails, and the prints of two nails were on the
little feet.
"Who hath dared to wound thee?" cried the
Giant; "tell me, that I may take my big sword and
slay him."
"Nay!" answered the child; "but these are the
wounds of Love."
"Who art thou?" said the Giant, and a strange
awe fell on him, and he knelt before the little
child.
And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to
him, "You let me play once in your garden, to-
day you shall come with me to my garden,
which is Paradise."

cuando estuvo a su lado, la cara se le puso roja
de furia. -¿Quién se ha atrevido a lastimarte? –
preguntó. En las palmas de las manos del niño
se veían las marcas de dos clavos y las marcas
de dos clavos aparecían en sus piecitos.
-¿Quién se ha atrevido a lastimarte? –gritó el
gigante-. Dímelo y lo atravesaré con mi enorme
espada.
-¡No! –respondió el niño-. Estas son las heridas
del Amor.
-¿Quién eres? –preguntó el gigante. Y se sintió
invadido por un extraño temor que lo impulsó a
caer de rodillas.
El niñito sonrió al gigante y le dijo: -Una vez me
permitiste jugar en tu jardín. Hoy vendrás
conmigo a mi jardín, que es el Paraíso.
