INTRODUCTION OF WIPRO LTD.

Today Wipro Ltd. is one of the most successful Technological Companies in India and
around the world. Wipro an Indian based company was founded as a peanut oil company with
name of Western Indian Vegetable Products in 1945 by M.H. Premji and later was renamed

"Wipro Ltd." by his son Azim H. Premji.

When Wipro Ltd was first created by M.H. Premji; no one ever thought it would become one
of the leaders in Information Technology. While M. H. Premji lived, the company was
global, with about 350 employees, in and around Bombay, with $3 million in revenues. The
company was already traded when M.H. Premji its founder had passed the way. Many
shareholders did not believe on the new leader of the company, Azim Premji because of his
age. Stockholders demanded to sell the company because of the stock's lousy performance.
Wipro's mainstay was to buy the peanuts from farmers and crush them to produce shortening
and edible cakes. The employees would taste the peanuts to evaluate the farmer's harvest to
make an estimate of the oil they contained and then they would set a price. The system was
improved when A. Premji asked the farmers to send samples that the company would dry and
weigh to calculate oil content.
A. Premji diversified, first into soaps and beauty products and then venturing even further
with manufacturing hydraulic components for construction equipment. The question is how
did Wipro entered the Technology world if it was founded as an oil company and then into
soaps and beauty products. The new Indian government rules passed in the late 1970's
requiring foreign companies to run through Indian-owned affiliates gave Wipro an
opportunity to get involved in technology after IBM took its operations and went out of India.
Wipro didn’t know anything about computers neither Premji nor his lieutenants but this was
not an impediment to make them.
At a 4,000-square-foot office in Bangalore Wipro created its first minicomputer that would

Page 1

sell for far less than an IBM mainframe but do similar work. With in a year Wipro got into
the PC business and quickly became the leading computer company in India. With its ups and
downs, today Wipro Ltd. provides software programming, engineering design, and back-
office services for more than 500 of the world's largest corporations.
By employing young technology graduates willing to work almost 80% lower than those
West. Wipro Ltd. and General Electric Co. set up a joint venture, making this Wipro's big
breakthrough. The company now has over421 customers across the USA, Europe and Japan
with clients such as IBM, Sony, etc. It is listed at the New York Stock Exchange and is part
of its TMT (technology media telecom) index testing. Wipro has developed centers and
offices across India, North America, Latin America, Asian Pacific and Europe. Wipro’s 80%
profits come from software exports. The company market capitalization has jumped from $67
million in 1990 to $4.1 billion, making it India’s third largest company by that measure.

BACKGROUND

The company was incorporated on 29 December 1945, in Amalner a small town in Jalgaon
district by Mohamed Premji as 'Western India Palm Refined Oil Limited', later abbreviated to
'Wipro'. It was initially set up as a manufacturer of vegetable and refined oils in Amalner,
Maharashtra, India under the trade names of Kisan, Sunflower and Camel. The company logo
still contains a sunflower to reflect products of the original business.

In 1966, after Mohamed Premji’s death, his son Azim Premji returned home from Stanford
University and took over Wipro as its chairman at the age of 21.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the company shifted its focus to new business opportunities in
the IT and computing industry, which was at a nascent stage in India at the time. On 7 June
1977, the name of the company changed from Western India Vegetable Products Limited, to
Wipro Products Limited. The year 1980 marked the arrival of Wipro in the IT domain. In
1982, the name was changed from Wipro Products Limited to Wipro Limited. Meanwhile,
Wipro continued to expand in the consumer products domain with the launch of "Ralak" a
tulsi-based family soap and "Wipro Jasmine", a toilet soap.

1966–1992

In 1988, Wipro diversified its product line into heavy-duty industrial cylinders and mobile
hydraulic cylinders. A joint venture company with the United States' General Electric in the
name of Wipro GE Medical Systems Pvt. Ltd. was set up in 1989 for the manufacture, sales,
and service of diagnostic and imaging products. Later, in 1991, tipping systems and Eaton
hydraulic products were launched. The Wipro Fluid Power division, in 1992, developed
expertise to offer standard hydraulic cylinders for construction equipment and truck tipping
systems. The market saw the launch of the "Santoor" talcum powder and "Wipro Baby Soft"
range of baby toiletries in 1990.

1994–2000

In 1995, Wipro set up an overseas design centre, Odyssey 21, for undertaking projects and
product developments in advanced technologies for overseas clients. Wipro Infotech and
Wipro Systems were amalgamated with Wipro in April that year. Five of Wipro's
manufacturing and development facilities secured the ISO 9001 certification during 1994–95.

Page 5

FUTURE GROWTH, PROSPECTS, AND UPCOMING PLANS OF

WIPRO LTD.

Newly appointed CEO Abidali Z Neemuchwala has outlined a six-pronged strategy in a bid
to get the company back on the growth path, alongside its peers.

Addressing reporters, the CEO of the third largest exporter outlined his strategy of aligning
some business practices such as consulting with digital, as clients are increasingly looking to
spend more in that area.

“With this approach of combining consulting with digital practice, we can secure mindshare
amongst existing and new customers,” he said.

Wipro, had a few months back acquired Designit, a digital start-up company in Europe,
which designs user interface and counts Audi, NTT Data and Samsung as some of its clients.

So far this has started yielding results. In the fourth quarter, it won seven joint deals in digital
business. Wipro is also arming its employees with these kinds of skill-set and as a part of the
programme, it has trained 10,000 employees in digital technologies and plans to cover
another 20,000 employees.

Second, Neemuchwala plans to focus on client mining, an area former CEO TK Kurien had
mixed success in. The company has set up an integrated services unit with a mandate of
integrating technology solutions from different service lines, the CEO said. Further, it has
launched a programme called Addroit, designed for delivery managers, which is aimed at
covering 900 managers.

Analysts believe that this will help the company in scaling up large accounts. According to
Dipen Shah, Senior Vice-President and Head of Private Client Group Research, Kotak
Securities, Wipro continues to be impacted by the lack of scale up in large accounts, apart
from the continuing challenges in the energy and telecom segments.

Another area earmarked by Neemuchwala is localisation. In continental Europe, the IT major

has acquired Cellent, which strengthens its presence, and is looking to setting up a delivery

Page 21
Dr. PRASHANT MASHETTY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

centre in Mountain View, California and two other cities in the US. Additionally, it is
investing in markets like Latin America, Canada and Africa.

Neemuchwala believes that taking a non-linear approach, which involves not adding people
to get more revenue, is the way of the future, in addition to automation. In the last quarter,
Wipro had said that it had freed around 4,300 employees.

“This year we plan to do a large scale roll out across many clients and plan to release 4,500
people from our engagements through automation in the year,” he said.

Finally, Neemuchwala has laid out a plan to leverage the partner ecosystem such as start-ups,
acquiring companies and other such things. This is in line with Wipro Ventures, which has a
$100 million fund, headed by Rishad Premji, which has made six investments till date,
spending $20 million.
