Ancient Rome

The Roman empire was a very prominent civilization for its time. It was an Agrarian and

slave-based economy that populated the Mediterranean area. The civilizations economy was

controlled by agriculture and trade, a small part industrial, making it a well-rounded area. The

largest industry in ancient Rome was mining. Coins of brass, bronze, copper, silver and gold

were created with high artisanship, and by the Emperors to circulate various forms of media.

Numerous sea lanes provided access to parts of the Mediterranean. Romans thrived off imported

goods. Roman farmers were mainly dominate in Italy. Grains, olives, grapes, olive oil, and wine

were a few of the goods manufactured and traded.

Ancient Rome had no general caste system but consisted of a few specific parts of

political members. The wealthy people governed the city, as well as most other civilizations, and

were in control of the choices made. These wealthy people were called patricians. The patricians

were voted into the senate by the equites, the next class down. The Equites were not quite as

wealthy as the patricians, but they still owned property. The Romans of all classes strived to

make their sons into great soldiers or members of the government.

The political structure of ancient Rome consisted kings, senators, citizens, non-citizens,

and slaves. Public display of status was a very important feature of Roman society. The upper
class mainly consisted of the Senatorial and Equestrian class. The basic for these two were

political and economic. Belonging to one of the upper classes was considered prestigous and

determined one's economic and political opportunities. The lower class consisted of commons,

Latins, foreigners, freed people, and slaves.

Ancient Rome made many major contributions to its time as well as can be seen in the

world in modern times. It affected areas of architecture, government, and medicine among

others. Ancient Rome was one of the most influential empires of its time. It was even the creator

of simple daily things such as concrete, bound books, and roads. The ancient Romans also

achieved a mass amount of research in astronomy and geometry.

Ancient Rome and Greece were extremely different from each other, a few things

including geography, government, economy, and art. Greek art was considered superior to that of

Roman Art. Both civilizations focused on agriculture for they were abundant in good farming

land. They both also had a large difference in social classes and the way they elected people as a

part of the government.
