Kin 341: Activity Plan #1

Participants: 29 Grade 6 students Date: February 28th, 2017

Location: Brunskill School Time: 8:50-9:45am

Activity: Can’t Touch This

Movement Skills and Concepts:

 Throwing
 Catching
 Locomotion
 Evading
 Spatial awareness

Equipment Needed:
 Gym
 4 sets of pinnies (7 per set) - match coloured shirts if not enough pinnies
 Possibly 8 pylons if there is not a good line boundary in the gym
 1 object per activity area (e.g., soccer ball, rubber chicken, flying disc)
 Foam balls for practicing throwing
 Hula hoops
 Tape for target on the wall?

Safety:
 Sufficient traction
 Arms length away from person with object
 Boundary a safe distance from walls

Outcomes:
1. Participants will learn and establish spatial awareness and effective teamwork. They will
learn proper throwing and catching technique through progressions.
2. Participants will discover what it means to work as a team and how to become a good
teammate.
3. Participants will develop throwing and catching skills in different game settings.

Introduction (3 minutes - Hillary and Jenn):

 Who we are – names
 What we are going to do - Invasion game and fundamental skill kicking and dribbling
focus
 What is an invasion game - activities that involve controlling an object, keeping it away
from opponents and moving it into position to score. Both offensive and defensive
players share the same playing area as they work to prevent the other team from scoring.
 Why we are going to do it - By playing these games, participants will learn the key skills
and tactics for games such as Soccer, Handball, Ultimate Frisbee, Football, Basketball,
Hockey, Goalball, Wheelchair Basketball and Lacrosse.

We are going to warm you up with a game called Kaleidoscope.

Warm Up - Kaleidoscope (10 minutes - Angela):
 Setup:
o Define a boundary, if there are no sufficient boundaries one must be made with
pylons
o Collect 4 sets of different colored pinnies (7 per set)
o Divide the group into 4 teams
 Rules:
o Each group will have one turn being “it.”
o The leader begins the activity by calling out the colour of one of the groups and
starting the stopwatch. The group wearing the identified colour is “it” and tries to
tag members of the other groups.
o When participants are tagged, they move outside of the activity area. Participants
on the sideline perform an on-the-spot physical activity that they have chosen
(e.g., jumping jacks, squats, push-ups).
o When the “it” group has tagged all members of the other two groups, the leader
stops the stopwatch and announces the time.
o The game is repeated so that all groups have a chance to be “it.” Group members
work together to tag all members of the other groups in the shortest possible time.
o Start with everyone walking, then running
 Increase the Challenge:
o Decrease the size of the activity area to make it more difficult to avoid being
tagged.
o Decrease the number of participants on each group and have more groups play.
o Change the type of locomotion (e.g., hopping, jumping, skippings).
 Decrease the Challenge:
o Have two groups be the taggers instead of one to decrease the challenge for the
taggers.
o Increase the size of the activity area to make it easier to avoid being tagged.
o Attempt to tag the highest number of participants in an allotted time.
o Have taggers use an implement (e.g., pool noodle) to tag participants.

Fundamental skill - Throwing and Catching (10 minutes - Nakia):

 Throwing cues:
o Step
o Open up
o Throw
o Follow through
 Catching cues:
o Make a target with your hands
o Wide base of support
o Eye on the ball
o Absorb the ball
 Activity:
o Get into pairs (groups of 3 if needed)
o Throwing progressions with different types of throws (high, low, far, short)
Activity - Can’t Touch This (20 minutes - Jenn and Hillary):
Activity Set Up:
 Divide participants into equal groups of at least three participants per group
 Two groups set up in an activity area using four pylons to mark the corners
 One group in each activity area wears pinnies
 Split the gym into 2 halves and put 2 teams on each half
 Switch the teams after 5 minutes of play so they get to play against each team once

Activity Instructions:
1. Groups try to maintain possession of an object of choice by throwing between players
2. The participant with the object cannot move from her or his spot
3. A point is given if a group can make five successful passes in a row
4. The opposing group tries to intercept the object while it is being passed
5. Once the opposing group gains possession of the object, or after the group with the object
has made five successful passes in a row, it is the other groups turn to pass the object

Questions to refine movement strategies, tactics:

1. What do you do differently to throw the ball far?
2. What do you do differently to throw the ball high?

Adaptations:
 Throwing at different levels and speeds
 Throw with different objects (i.e. tennis ball, soccer ball, rubber chicken, etc.)

Skill Development:
Movement Skill Set up Activity Cues
or Concept

Throwing Balls and Throw - Step

partners progressions - Open up
- Throw
- Follow through

Catching Balls and Throwing and - Make a target with your hands
partners catching - Wide base of support
progressions - Eye on the ball
- Absorb the ball

Closure (2 minutes):
 Today we taught you some invasion games
 Remember those are games where both offensive and defensive players share the same
area and try to stop the other team from scoring.
 We learned the basic overhand throw: remembering the cues step, open up, throw, follow
through
 Thank you! Have a great rest of your day and we will see to again next Tuesday!
