Subject/Lesson Title/Group: Estimated Time: 45 minutes – (then we all re-

Science/ Stay away tooth decay/ first grade group at the end of the day to check what
happened)
Standard(s):

PO 2. Compare the results of the investigation to predictions made prior to the investigation.

Design and conduct a simple investigation to explore a question

Learning Goal(s): Resources/Materials: Lesson Preparation

 Students are able to make predictions 4 Clear plastic cups

 Students will learn how to keep good 4 Hard boiled eggs
dental hygiene Drinks- Coke, grape juice, milk, water
 Students will be able to reflect on their Prediction worksheets
predications and what really happened Toothbrush
after experimenting Toothpaste

Key vocabulary:
 Hygiene
 Decay
 Enamel
Anticipatory Set: (This is where you engage learners in connecting to content in lesson either in
their prior knowledge or personal connections.) Building Background

 Ask class if anyone knows why it is important to keep our teeth healthy
 Have them identify which drinks I pour into the plastic cups, and survey who likes to drink
what
 Have students make predictions on what they think will happen to the eggs when I put them
in these liquids

Mini-Lesson: (Your instruction and the” I do, we do” part of the modeling…)

 For the mini-lesson I will have students identify which drinks I am pouring into each cup
 I will tell students that the white on the eggs are similar to the enamel on our teeth
 I will survey students (integrated with our graphing unit in math) who likes to drink what by
raising their hands and write it down with tally marks on the white board Cognitive strategy
 I will then have the students predict what they think will happen to the eggs as we let them
soak in each different liquid
 I will give them the instructions to fill out their prediction worksheets slowly controlling my
speech. Comprehensible input
Worktime: (Set students to work after the” I do, we do” (modeling) time. Worktime is the “you do”
time.
 Students will be in charge of filling out their prediction worksheets and write what they
predict will happen to the eggs as they soak in the different liquids
 Students may draw what they think will happen to the eggs as well as they soak in the
liquids over time
 Students can work at their tables to help each other out. SOCIAL INTERACTION
 I will be walking around helping students who need extra help
 Students may come get closer to the eggs soaking one table at a time to have a closer look
when writing/ drawing their predictions. Social interaction

Closure: (Important lesson component. Students should summarize their learning in some way.)
Lesson Delivery
 At the end of the day, we will re-group and discuss the students predicitions on which drinks are
“healthy” and “unhealthy” for teeth
 I will take out each egg, and let the students see what the eggs look like
 Next, I will ask students if they have any ideas on how to remove the stains from the stained
eggs
 Hoping that someone suggests to try and brush them, I will then proceed to brush the eggs with
a toothbrush and toothpaste and remove the icky stains. Practice and application
 Next, students will then write what happened to the eggs as they were brushed, and what they
learned from the science experiment Review/ assesment
Differentiation for Student Needs:

-For the LANGUAGE LEARNERS it is very important to show the liquids being poured directly so they can
relate the liquid to that bottle. Example: Coke will be poured straight from the coke can for learners to
visually see, milk from the carton, etc.

- Language learner students can explain their predictions using coloring and drawing

-Examples of predictions can be shown on the document camera

Questions: Formative assessment:

What happens If we don’t take care of our Review/ Assessment
teeth?
What our ways/ things we can do to make sure I will be formally assessing the students by checking
we have healthy teeth? if they drew and labeled their predictions correctly
and that the conclusions on what the drinks do to
their teeth are accurate
