established position in front of the attacking player in
order to avoid committing a defensive/blocking foul.
Carrying

 … when dribbling a basketball, a player cannot at any

Double Dribble point place their hand underneath the ball in order to

Rules

1. Travelling - a player cannot walk whilst holding the ball

2. Double Dribble - a player cannot dribble the ball then pick it up and then start
dribbling again. Neither can they bounce the ball with both hands at the same time.
3. Fouls - basketball is technically a non-contact game. A defensive player must avoid
making contact with a player otherwise they will be called for a foul. In most leagues, 5-6
fouls and then the player is out.
4. Carrying - when dribbling a basketball, a player cannot at any point place their hand
underneath the ball in order to control it, or to unsteady the defense.
5. Out-of-Bounds - during play, the basketball must stay inside the court. It cannot even
be bounced on the boundary lines (baseline and sideline). A player in possession of the
ball must also been in bounds i.e., they cannot dribble the ball whilst their foot is out-of-
bounds
6. Scoring - The semi-circle is the three-point line, any shots made that are taken from
behind the line are worth 3-points. Shots taken inside the three-point line are worth 2-
points
7. Free-throws - if a player is fouled whilst in the act of shooting they will go to the free-
throw line to shoot uncontested shots worth 1-point each. If fouled whilst shooting a: 3-
pointer they take 3 free throws; 2-pointer they take 2 free-throw; if they made the shot
and was fouled, they will take 1 free-throw.
8. Backcourt - Once a team in possession of the ball has brought the ball over the half-
court line the basketball cannot be dribbled or passed back in to their defensive half. A
player catching or stopping with the ball on the half-court line will also result in a
backcourt violation.
9. Inbounding - when the basketball is lost out-of-bounds, the team that touched it last
will not have possession of the ball. Therefore, the other team will have to inbound the
ball (aka pass the ball in) from where the ball was knocked out of bounds. Also, after a
made basket, the ball must be taken behind the basket and baseline before being
passed in. The player inbounding the ball only has 5-seconds to pass the ball in, and
should not step on or over the line when passing
10. Jump Ball/Tip-off - At the beginning of a basketball game, one player from either
team must stand in the center circle on either side of the half-court line. The remaining
players must stand outside the center circle on either side. When the referee throws up
the ball, the two players must jump up and try and tip the ball to a teammate. A jump
ball can also occur during game play when two players from opposing teams are
holding on tightly to the ball (this is a held-ball) with neither winning possession. The jump
ball will take place at either free-throw line or center-circle, wherever the held-ball
happened to be nearest to.
11. 24-, 10-, 3-second violations- in basketball when a team starts a new possession with the
ball they only have 24-seconds in order to take a shot, that must at least touch the rime.
When in possession of the ball in their defensive half, they have only 10-seconds to cross
the half-court line. In their attacking half, a player on the attacking team cannot stand
inside the key (aka restricted area) longer than 3-seconds. Any team that commits any
of these violations will result in the opposing team getting to inbound the ball.
12. Offensive foul/Charging - an attacking player cannot run into or push over a
defensive player. A defensive player must get in an established position in front of the
attacking player in order to avoid committing a defensive/blocking foul.
