Pre-Calculus
One day, John and Mark were playing checkers when suddenly they grew tired of it.
They started to look at the actual checkerboard. Together, they were trying to figure out how
many squares were on the board, but they could not agree. Now we have to find out how many
squares are on this checkerboard.
I believe the one big square is made up of 116 squares. The 116 squares are made up of
various sizes. There are 81 squares that are 1x1, 16 squares that are 2x2, and so forth. It is
apparent that each time the size of the square increases, the number of squares decreases.
1x1 81
2x2 16
3x3 9
4x4 1
5x5 5
6x6 1
7x7 1
8x8 1
9x9 1
