WHERE THE FUNCTIONS MEET

Consider the graphs of a quadratic function and a linear function on the same set of axes.

Notice that we could have:

If the graphs meet, the coordinates of the points of intersection of the graphs can be
found by solving the two equations simultaneously.

EXERCISE

1. Without using technology, find the coordinates of the point(s) of intersection of:

a y = x2-2x+8 and y = x+6 b y = -x2+3x+9 and y = 2x-3

c y = x2-4x+3 and y = 2x-6 d y = -x2+4x-7 and y = 5x-4

2. Use a graphics calculator to find the coordinates of the points of intersection

(to 2 decimal places) of the graphs with equations:

a y = x2-3x+7 and y = x+5 b y = x2-5x+2 and y = x-7

c y = -x2-2x+4 and y = x+8 d y = -x2+4x-2 and y = 5x-6

Homework:

1. a i Find where y = x2 meets y = x+2.

ii Solve for x: x2 > x+2.

b i Find where y = x2+2x-3 meets y = x-1.

ii Solve for x: x2+2x-3 > x-1.

c i Find where y = 2x2-x+3 meets y = 2+x+x2.

ii Solve for x: 2x2-x+3 > 2+x+x2.

4
d i Find where y = 𝒙 meets y = x+3.
4
ii Solve for x: > x+3
𝒙

2. For which value of c is the line y=3x+c a tangent to the parabola with equation

y=x2-5x+7?

3. Find the value of m for which the lines y=mx-2 are tangents to the curve with
equation y=x2-4x+2.
