Assignment 1

(Due Oct.19)
1. A psychologist measured the following times (in seconds) required for 10 rats to complete a
maze: 40, 63, 58, 35, 55, 67, 48, 38, 68, 42. Determine the average, median, sample variance
and sample standard deviation for these data. Confirm that the sum of residuals is zero.
Is it likely that the data is normally distributed? Why?
2. Construct a histogram for these pollution data given in ppm of ozone: 14.6, 11.3, 16.9, 34.0,
10.9, 33.5, 20.8, 23.1, 33.4, 15.1, 16.5, 22.7, 6.4, 7.1, 16.3, 32.7, 21.2, 24.7, 18.0, 18.3, 22.6, 20.1,
15.2, 13.8, 16.0, 17.3, 12.1, 25.3, 21.8, 7.1, 33.0, 11.7, 8.5, 12.2, 8.7, 17.0. Use bin size of 2.5
ppm. Calculate the mean and the median for the set of results.
3. Prepare the plots of probability density function and cumulative distribution function for
standardized normal distribution (mean 0, standard deviation 1) in the range from -5 to 5, with a
step of 0.1.
The upper and lower specification limits on capacitance in an electronic circuit are 2.18 to 2.26
µF. Off-the-shelf capacitors can be bought with a nominal capacitance of 2.50 µF and a standard
deviation of 0.3 µF. In a batch of 1000 such capacitors, how many would you expect to meet the
specification?
Solve the problem using both normal distribution tables and the NORMDIST function in Excel.
4. Prepare the binomial distribution diagrams illustrating the probability of obtaining a given
number of heads in a series of 25 coin tosses using a biased coin (probability of success 0.75)
and a fair coin. What is the probability of obtaining 12 heads with the biased coin? With the fair
coin?
5. Prepare the normal probability plot for the following set of data: 321.9, 295.3, 248.7, 265.4,
253.3, 335.1, 285.1, 307.3, 275.8, 318.4, 331.1, 307.6, 312.5, 345.8, 332.6, 305.3, 280.1, 325.9,
300.0, 307.8. Superimpose the cumulative normal distribution curve on the plot. Based on the
diagram, is it likely that the data is distributed normally?
6. Perform the Shapiro-Francia test on data from Q.5 to check if the data is distributed normally.
7. The following data were obtained in a series of 34 consecutive measurements: 15, 16, 14, 17,
19, 16, 21, 22, 21, 17, 19, 15, 14, 11, 16, 19, 23, 22, 19, 17, 13, 11, 16, 17, 19, 19, 21, 17, 15, 16,
18, 22, 21, 20. Find the lag k autocorrelation coefficients for k values ranging from 1 to 6 and
prepare the autocorrelation plot in this range. Is the data autocorrelated? If yes, what is the
possible underlying model?
8. Consider a trial designed to compare cell growth rate using a standard way of preparing a
biological specimen (method A) and a new way (method B). Suppose that six trials done on
successive days in the order A, A, A, B, B, B gave the results 6, 9, 5, 9, 11, 13, and also that
immediately before this trial a series of preparations on successive days with method A gave the
following results: 10, 6, 7, 5, 8, 11, 13, 14, 8, 7, 10, 4, 5, 5, 9, 7, 8, 11, 10, 8, 8, 9, 12, 10, 8, 6, 8, 9,
7, 5, 9, 4, 8, 11, 10. Using an external reference distribution, compute the significance level for
the null hypothesis µA = µB when the alternative is µA > µB. Is there evidence that B gives higher
rates than A?
9. Given the following data from a randomized experiment, construct the randomized reference
distribution and use it to estimate the significance of the difference between method A and B.

A B B A B
12 17 11 9 13

10. Lead concentration (ppm) in contaminated soil was determined in 10 samples by two
laboratories, A and B. Each sample collected in the field was split into two and sent to the two
laboratories for analysis. Because of the small sample size, each aliquot could be analyzed only
once. The results obtained are listed below. Use the Student’s t test and the Wilcoxon T test to
determine whether laboratories A and B produced similar results (α = 0.05).
