At the start of each shift, it is the responsibility of the operator of any scissor lift to conduct a pre-
operational inspection of the machine. This includes both a visual inspection of the lift and a
functional test of the controls and safety devices.
It is the responsibility of the assigned operator of the scissor lift to record the daily pre-operational
inspection in the log book or on the inspection sheet provided with each scissor lift. If there is no
inspection sheet or log book with the scissor lift, do not operate the machine and report this to your
supervisor.
The operator is also responsible to inspect the work area which the scissor lift will be operating.
Before moving the scissor lift into position, the operator should walk the path the machine will travel
to make sure there are no holes, drop-offs or obstructions in the travel path and that the floor or
surface can safely support the weight of the scissor lift.
Before raising the scissor lift platform, the operator must ensure:
All workers in the scissor lift must remain within the guardrail containment of the platform. No
person is to stand on the mid-rails, planks, step-stools, ladders or other device that allows a worker
to stand above the platform floor.
Never connect your fall protection system to anchor points or parts of the structure outside of the
scissor lift platform. Follow the manufacturer’s instruction and local OHS regulations for any
requirements to use personal fall protection equipment when in the scissor lift.
If you have any questions about the safe operation of a scissor lift or any other elevating work
platform, be sure to speak to your supervisor, Ledcor Superintendent or Project Safety
Coordinator.
