CAIL News and Events

Goodbye from CAIL:

As you may be aware CAIL is due to cease all operations at the end of March. We have
been running for almost 10 years now and the organisation has gone from strength to
strength. We have evolved to become a voice for people living with disability, older people
and carers in Cambridgeshire. We listened to many individual experiences and we let
people know that they are not alone, that there are people out there with similar
experiences. We have taken what people told us back to the County Council and service
providers to try and affect real change.

We are all immensely proud of the work that we have done here at CAIL and would like to
thank our volunteers, our independent members, our partner organisations, Cambridgeshire
County Council, the many, many people that have given us advice and support over the
years and everyone else that has made this incredible journey so rewarding and fulfilling.

We wish you all the very best!

Sincerely
The Entire Staff Team

CAIL's 'Insights' Event - Join us Tomorrow!:

Join us tomorrow for our Insights event! As a pan-

disability charity we have worked with many people
with disabilities and the organisations that provide
support and information. We have learnt of the
range of challenges that people with different
disabilities face.

Insights will be a fun event giving everyone an

opportunity to learn about some of these
challenges, find out about how we can better
support each other and also about the new technologies that are available to help people
live independently for longer.

Voices4Choices - Library of Lived Experiences:

Create PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API PDFCROWD
Over the course of the Voices4Choices project, CAIL have been collecting stories from all
over Cambridgeshire. We have gathered these stories together to be used as a resource
for anybody to look at.

There are two purposes behind this idea. Firstly, this is for people new to or thinking about
applying for Direct Payments to gain a personal insight into the highlights, benefits,
unexpected outcomes, pitfalls and frustrations Secondly, this is a resource for
professionals, academics and researchers to learn from first hand personal experience
what is working well for people using Direct Payments, what is not working so well and what
can be done better.

The Library of Lived Experiences will be launched within the next two weeks, along with the
evaluation of the Voices4Choices project. Additionally CAIL have been talking to other
organisations about maintaining the Library after CAIL's closure.

We will email you all when the Library of Lived Experiences officially opens.

The Model Conversation:

The Model Conversation explored the

histories of people with disabilities to inform
the future of everyone. By the end of it the
project leader, Justin Craig, had facilitated in-
depth interviews with 20 people with
disabilities recording their spoken memories
by recruiting and training a team of
volunteers to conduct the interviews.

All of these interviews have been transcribed

and can be found on the CAIL Website by
following this link.

By using the interviews as a basis materials were developed for use by schools and other
organisations as a training and educational resource. These can be found on the CAIL
website by following this link.

A short documentary was also made about the project and the people interviewed. The film
is available as a discursive resource designed to generate debate and challenge accepted
views. It can be watch on the CAIL YouTube channel which you can access by following
this link.

Or by checking out the attached video below. For more information on the The Model
Conversation please visit our website:

Goodbye Messages from our Partner Organisations:

Cambridgeshire County Council:

"Thank you very much for all help, especially via the Bulletin, in sharing information about
the Council’s activities to a wider audience. It has been much appreciated."

Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and Peterborough:

"At Healthwatch Cambridgeshire, we have worked closely with CAIL since we started back
in 2013, supporting each other to make sure that people’s voices are heard when decisions
are made around local services. As organisations, we both want to get people involved in
making services better, our focus is on health and social care, whilst CAIL have a remit
around all public services that disabled people use, including transport and benefits. We
have really appreciated being able to send non health or care stories and concerns in their
direction, knowing that they would hear what people said and represent them to the right
agency.

We know that they have shared their health and care concerns with us and we’ve done
good work together on things like trying to improve services for people who use
wheelchairs. We are very sad that CAIL is coming to an end, and will miss the staff team,
their expertise and their partnership approach to work."

Cam Sight:

"CAIL has been a valuable resource for Cambridgeshire, an independent voice to represent
views of local people. Cam Sight has been proud to sit on two of the partnership boards and
to work closely with the excellent team at CAIL. You will be missed and I hope all the
involved organisations and independent members will be able to carry on the spirit of
collaboration and joint progress that CAIL inspired.

On behalf of all at Cam Sight, thank you for your hard work and our very best wishes for
you moving forward."

VoiceAbility:

"We wish you all the best."

CCVS:

"It is with great sadness that we at CCVS are having to write something for the final CAIL
bulletin. Over the years we have been impressed with the work that CAIL have done to
raise awareness about disabilities and to support individuals and their families. Changes to
the welfare state and to benefits along with growing inequality mean that it is more
important that groups like CAIL exist to work with, and speak up for, their members and the
wider community. The closure of CAIL will leave a gap in the blanket of support that small
but vital local charities and community groups provide. If there is any way this phoenix can
raise from the ashes we will be there to help."

GET Group:

"It is a sad loss – a retrograde step that will leave a large hole where genuine
representation of the services user voice has got to with your help. And more and more falls
to GET Group and the CCVS’s with ever less funding."

Red2Green:

"Everyone at Red2green are sorry to see the final issue of the Bulletin which we have found
a very useful hub for receiving and disseminating information about disability related issues
and services in Cambridgeshire. You will be sorely missed."

Rowan:

"Thank you very much for sharing our current news and events from Rowan we really
appreciate it. Wishing you all the best!"

Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum:

"Thank you for your efforts over the years and best wishes to you all personally with your
future plans."

Consultations:

Tell Us About Your Care:

Disability Rights UK have extended their partnership with the Care Quality Commission
(CQC) to gather feedback from disabled people about their experience of health services
and social care, via CQC's 'Tell Us About Your Care' initiative. The CQC would really like to
hear from disabled (and non-disabled) people on their experience of using any of the
services they regulate, including GP and dentist surgeries; hospitals; services in the home;
etc. A full list of these services can be viewed by follow this link.

Adults Committee Decision on Proposed Changes to Cambridgeshire County Council’s

Fairer Contributions Policy:

At Cambridgeshire County Council’s Adults Committee meeting on 8 March, Councillors

decided not to go ahead with three proposed changes to the Council’s Fairer Contributions
Policy. However, the Committee agreed to go ahead with the fourth proposal to make Direct
Debit the default method of payment.

Although the Committee accepted proposal four to make Direct Debit the default method for
Adult Social Care invoices issued in respect of contributions towards the cost of care and
support, other ways of payment will be available for people who do not have a bank account
or do not want to use Direct Debits.

Councillors made their decision after listening carefully to the feedback and views of those
affected, given as part of the 12 week consultation. Further information on the Committee’s
decision can be found here:

New Community Café:

Red2green are very busy working on plans for their new community café adjacent to
Bottisham Village College. Thanks from funding from the big lottery Red2Greens arts and
crafts café will give clients with learning disabilities, and learners on the autistic spectrum,
the chance to learn new skills as they get involved helping out in the kitchen and serving
customers. They will also get the opportunity to share some of their crafting skills with the
customers. Red2Green looks forward to hearing from anyone who might like to join them,
either as a learner or as a volunteer.
