Areation separation process

Aeration is a type of separation process in which air and water a brought in contact with
each other. The most place using aeration is in water treatment plant. Aeration is used
to treat water form contaminant and to remove hardness from water, also it is used to
scrub of undesirable gases from water . For example, carbon dioxide reduction
(decarbonation) , oxidation of iron and manganese found in many well waters (oxidation
tower),ammonia and hydrogen sulfide reduction(stripping) , Aeration is also an effective
method of bacteria control. There are two general methods used for aeration . First
method is water fall aerator it consist of spray nozzles which diffuse the water into thin
droplets to make a good contact between air and water. Second method is air diffusion
aerator in which water and air brought into contact through countercurrent moving of
air and water inside a tube causing a bubbles which increase the mass transfer rate ,
This ensures good air-water contact for "scrubbing" of undesirable gases from the
water. In conclusion , aeration is a good type of separation process especially for water
treatment plant because it is a cheap way when there is a huge amount of undesirable
gases in the water and it will be removed using air agent which is available instead of
using expensive chemicals . There is some limitation for using aeration like decreasing
the temperature decrease the efficiency of aeration therefore it will be not suitable in
colder climates also air contain oxygen which is a severe agent for corrosion and this
must be taken in accountable .
