Introduction:

1. Estimate the maximum amount of water that can be present in a room of internal volume 300 m3. The barometric pressure is 101 kPa. The
temperature of room is: a) 30oC and b) 25oC

2. Measurements in an air conditioned room show the following:

Barometric pressure = 101 kPa

Dry bulb temperature = 25oC
Wet bulb temperature = 18oC
Using the ideal gas model, find humidity ratio, degree of saturation and relative humidity

3. An air conditioned railway compartment has a cooling load of 20 kW with a sensible heat factor of 0.7. The compartment has to be
maintained at 25oC (DBT) and 50% relative humidity. The outside conditions are 42oC (DBT) and 28oC (WBT). For ventilation purpose 600 L/s
of outside air (measured at outside conditions) is required. Air from the cooling coil is supplied to the compartment at a temperature of 12oC.

A) Find the sensible and latent cooling load due to ventilation (in kW)
B) Required cooling capacity in kW and TR
C) If the COP of the air conditioning system is 3.0, find the power consumption (in kW)
4) An air conditioned classroom has a room cooling load of 100 kW with a sensible heat factor of 0.7. the room has to be maintained at 25°C
(DBT) and 50% relative humidity. The outside conditions are 42°C (DBT) and 28°C (WBT). For ventilation purpose 1000 L/s of outside air
(measured at outside conditions) is required. Air from the cooling coil is supplied to the classroom at a temperature of 12°C. Find,
A) Sensible and latent cooling capacities of the coil (in kW)
B) If the COP of the air conditioning system is 4.0, find the power consumption (in kW)

5) Moist air entering at 30°C dry bulb temperature and 50 % RH enters a cooling coil at 2 kgda/s and is processed to a saturated condition at
10°C. Find the cooling load on the coil.

6. Find the heat transfer rate by convection from a human being to the surrounding air using the given data:

Convective heat transfer coefficient, hc = 4 W/m2.K

Clothing resistance, Icl = 0.2 clo
Body area, AD = 1.7 m2
Clothed-to-unclothed area ratio, fcl = 1.2
Average skin temperature, tsk = 33.4°C
Air temperature, ta = 25°C

7. In previous example, (refer question no: 6 given above) for the same heat transfer rate and other parameters remaining same, what should
be the air temperature if the clothing resistance is increased to 1 clo?

8. Find the respiration heat transfer from a human being using the following data:

Air temperature = 27°C

Relative humidity of air = 50%
Temperature of exhaled air = 37°C
Relative humidity of exhaled air = 100%
Metabolic rate = 1.2 met
Specific heat of moist air = 1020 J/kga.K
Latent heat of water = 2501 kJ/kg

9. The heat transfer rate from skin and respiration of a human body with a metabolic rate of 1.2 Met is 50 W/m2. Calculate the predicted mean
vote (PMV) of the occupants. Also calculate the predicted percentage dissatisfied PPD.

10. A ventilation duct has dimensions 1200 mm x 800 mm. Calculate the equivalent circular diameter for the duct. Calculate the velocity
pressure inside the duct if the flow rate through the duct is 5000 L/s.

11. Find the dimensions of a rectangular duct of aspect ratio (1:2) when 0.2 m3/s of air flows through it. The allowable frictional pressure drop is
3 Pa/m

12. Length of branch A of the circular duct having 600 mm diameter and carrying 1200 L/s has an equivalent length of 42 m. Find the diameter
of the branch B having a straight length of 15 m, carrying 800 L/s of air so that the two branches A and B have same frictional pressure drop

13. A fan operates at airflow rate of 20 m3/s, the fan total pressure rise is 45 Pa and the air temperature is 20°C. At these conditions the fan
requires a power input of 1.5 kW. Find the efficiency of the fan

14. Calculate the stack effect for

a) air cooled to a temperature of -34°C and

b) air heated to 540°C
Density of air at -34°C is 1.477 kg/m3 and at 540°C is 0.434 kg/m3 . Density of ambient air = 1.204 kg/m3.
Stack height is 10 m
