Adjustment of bearings in back-to-back arrangement

Axial clearance, adjustment by nut

Carefully read the complete instructions prior to starting work, the instructions may contain alternative
tools and measuring methods.

Illustrations are not always proportional and are not always showing the exact design.

The instructions are valid for SKF bearings only.

Where tool recommendations are made, please check the actual dimensions against the bearing and
any other components which may interfere with the use of the tool.

The mounting and dismounting of rolling bearings involve the handling of sometimes heavy weights, the
use of tools and other devices, and in some cases the use of high pressure oil. In order to avoid accidents,
injuries or damage to property please follow carefully the prescribed methods.

Precautions

Mount the bearing in a clean environment. Housings, shafts and other components of the bearing arrangement
should be checked to see that they are clean.

Adjustment procedure

Taper roller bearings must be rotated when they are being adjusted against each other, so that rollers reach
their correct position, i.e. the large end face of the rollers must be in contact with the guiding flange. Otherwise
the adjustment process will get wrong.

Press both cups into the housing by means of an appropriate tool. Respect
perpendicularity between cups and housing and ensure contact between cup
side faces and housing shoulders. Do not damage the raceways.

Press the inboard cone onto the shaft by a suitable tool (e.g. sleeve).Do not
load cage or roller set. If the bearings are lubricated with grease cover the
roller sets with grease now.

Complete the bearing arrangement by putting together preassembled shaft

and housing.

Adjust the bearings according to the following with axial clearance as indicated on the assembly drawing.

If there is no specification adjust the bearings with axial clearance of +0,02 to +0,10 mm (+0,0008 to +0,004").

Turn the shaft several times to ensure that the roller's side faces contact the
guiding flanges. Tighten the nut slowly until the bearing's friction rapidly
increase. Loose the nut by some degrees until you feel a free running of the
bearing arrangement. Note, only possible when having a loose fit on the
shaft.

Secure the nut's position by a suitable locking device (e.g. second nut)
