Application of gears in automotive industry

A gear is a component within a transmission device that transmits rotational force to

another gear or device
A gear is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another
toothed part in order to transmit torque.

7- Spur Gears 8- Helical Gears 9- Kiln Girth Gears

Transmission Gears
Application:
 propeller shaft of trucks
 propeller shaft of tractors
 propeller shaft of passenger cars
 construction machinery

Straight Gears
Straight gears are the simplest of the bevel gears. They are manufactured on precision
generating machines by indexing method ensuring that the teeth should be of tapered
depth and thickness.

Application
 chemical industries
 Steel plant
 Cars, auto mobile
 Machine tools
 Cement plant
 Textile processing
 Material handling system
 Sugar mills
 Cooling towers
Bevel Gears
Bevel gears are useful when the direction of a shaft's rotation needs to be
changed. They are usually mounted on shafts that are 90 degrees apart, but can
be designed to work at other angles as well the teeth on bevel gears can be
straight, spiral or hypoid.

Application
These gears find wide application in a number of fields including:
 Automotive industry
 Textile industry
 Industrial engineering products

Drive Gears
Everyone has seen a bicycle or used one and noticed that it is driven by a large
driver gear wheel with pedals attached. Smaller gears at the back are driven
round, in turn driving round the back wheel.
Applications
 Machinery
 Motorcycles
 Car engines

Automotive Gears
Application
 Trucks
 Car
 Buses
 Geared cycles.

Rack and pinion

Rack and pinion gears are used to convert rotation into linear motion.

A perfect example of this is the steering system on many cars

 Trucks
 Cars
 Off road applications

WORM AND WORM GEAR

Worm gears are used when large gear reductions are needed. Worm gears are
used widely in material handling and transportation machinery, machine tools,
automobiles etc.

Application

 Electric motors
 Automotive components

(Worm gear) (Rack and Pinion)

Spur Gears
Spur gears are straight-toothed gears having radial teeth used to transmit power
and motion between parallel axes. These gears are widely used for speed increase
or reduction, high torque, resolution for positioning systems.

Application
These gears find wide application in a number of fields including:

 Automobiles
 Textiles
 Industrial engineering

Helical Gears
Helical gear is a popular type of gear having its teeth cut at an angle, thus allowing
for more gradual and smoother meshing between gear wheels. The helical gears
are a refinement over spur gears.

Application :
These gears are used in areas requiring high speeds, large power transmission, or
where noise prevention is important.

 Automobiles
 Textile
 Aerospace
 Conveyors

Kiln Girth Gears

Applications

Some of the important applications of girth gears include:

 Heavy Machinery Industries

 Metal Casting Industries
 Metal Processing Industries
 Construction Industries
