Notes:
Use the first sheet as cover for the HW and write submitter’s name on it.
Show UNITS for each number.

Learning outcome 1 (12 pts) – Base Isolation and energy dissipation applications

1. Research a seismic isolation application in US. Write a description of the project (with pictures), specifying the
type of isolation systems, and explaining the main function and purpose of a seismic isolation system in regards of
the expected performance during seismic events. (6 pts)

2. Same as 1, for an energy dissipation application in US. (6 pts)

Learning outcome 2 (14 pts) – Main vibration properties of a SDOF system

3. Compute the natural vibration period of the following buildings based on typical values of weight and stiffness for
reinforced concrete structures. (2 pts)

Stories: 16 Stories: identify based on picture

Average floor area: 720 ft2 Average floor area: estimate the area based on picture
Average floor height: 10ft Average floor height: 9.5ft

4. What happens to the natural period of a structure if you double its height? (2 pts)

5. Explain the effect of the damping ratio on the period of vibration. What is the change in period of vibration for a
damping ratio =5% and =30%? (1 pts)

the two responses and how do they contribute to the total response. (1 pts)

8. Explain the concept of dynamic amplification factor, addressing the case of static forces, the energy dissipation
effect, and the vibration isolation effect (1 pts)

9. Determine the expected dynamic amplification for a SDOF system with n = 0.3, = 5% and n = 1.1, =
