Personal Statement

Having worked in primary healthcare within the MoD for the past 4 years, in a mix of
administrative and clinical roles, I have found consistently that I derive greatest personal
satisfaction when I am able to treat and help patients. As such I have decided that I wish to develop
my career within healthcare into a more primarily clinical role. I believe that my current role has
given me a firm grounding in regards to health monitoring, patient assessment and clinical policy
and I wish to broaden this skill set and gain exposure and experience to a greater range of patients
and environments.

My current job role also involves routinely taking part in compulsory personal development, usually
in the form of centrally mandated training courses, such as BLS and AED training, Safeguarding
Children, etc. Such training is also mandated at a practice level, including topics such as stroke,
traumatic brain injury, etc. I have personally researched and delivered training on the subjects of
shock, epilepsy, burns and crush injuries. In addition to these mandatory courses I have also
attended external courses to further improve my knowledge and abilities, which have included
venepuncture, diabetes care and ILS.

I have also mentored trainee medics on placement within my current practice, making sure they are
exposed to the greatest breadth of routine tasks that they are likely to encounter once they have
completed their training in order to prepare them as best as possible for their daily work load.

Outside of the clinical setting I have also endeavoured to improve my general education. In 2016 I
had the opportunity to attend an AS – Level English course and achieved a grade of B. I have
recently applied for a course to improve this further to an A2 level.

Prior to my current job I spent approximately ten years in the hospitality trade, which has imbued
me with a very strongly people centred approach to my work, which has been very beneficial when
treating patients.

In my personal life I train in martial arts, currently focusing on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am also an avid
war-gamer, collecting, painting and gaming with a number of different varieties of models. Both of
these pursuits tend to be very technical and detail orientated, and require a great deal of focus,
which I believe would be immensely beneficial, both in terms of studying and in clinical practice.

I conclusion, I believe that my existing healthcare experience, coupled with my general level of
maturity and drive to achieve my goal makes me well suited to pursuing a career in nursing.
