Speech competitions
Our school was very well represented by Kezia H (R2) and
Lachlan M (R7), ably supported by their teachers and
classmates, at the Nelson City Cluster Schools annual
speech competitions hosted by Clifton Terrace School last
Thursday. Kezia made an excellent case for taking action
to protect chimpanzees while Lachlan stimulated our
interest in basketball by telling us many things we hadn’t
previously thought seriously about. Well done to both of
you – we are really proud of you and appreciate the effort
you put in to win the school competition and to then go on
and represent our school.

On Wednesday the 8 th of September we had a hangi. We
were having the Hangi as part of our inquiry mahi. All the
wahine that came to help prepared the kai and the tane
were digging the hole. On Thursday all of the Te Pouahi
tamariki were very excited. Me and my dad came early in
the morning to help. At half past 5 we started to burn the
fire. We used the fire as our energy source to heat the
irons. Then a while after we started to line the baskets with
cabbage leaves. When that was done we put the hot ashes

for the fire back in on top of the hot irons. After that we
wrapped the kai in tin foil and muslin cloth. Then we put it
down in to the hangi pit. When the food was in we used wet
cloths and sacks to cover it. To cover the whole pit we put
tarpaulin down, and then covered it with dirt. The Hangi
was yum and it filled me up!

Student writing this week comes from Room 11. Most of
this class are still in their first year of schooling.
A dinosaur is an extinct animal. A Terex is a meat eater.
A Triceratops eats twigs and leaves. Some have points.
I am glad that they are extinct because they would eat

Gymnastics Competition – Years 4-6
The Nelson Primary Schools Gymnastics Competition will
be held for Year 4 – 6’s on Friday 5 th and Friday 12 th
November at the Mosey Grayson Memorial Gymnastics
Centre, Nelson Intermediate School Grounds, Tipahi
Street. Cost is $5 per gymnast.
Each school is required to provide a judge and parents
to marshall the team for the day. Please let me know as
soon as possible if you are able to assist with these duties
so I can commence taking entries.
On Monday 20th September from 3:30 – 4:30 pm
Nelson Gymnastics will be holding an information session
on the competition to explain any changes etc from last
year and give tips on teaching routines. If you want to
attend please let me know so I can advise Nelson
Gymnastics. This session will be held at the Mosey
Grayson Memorial Gymnastics Centre at the back of
Nelson Intermediate School, Tipahi St.
Entries for the competition are due by October 15 th,
2010. Please see Sheryll in the school office if you would
like to enter, help out or obtain a copy of the
programmes for each level.

TENNIS
The Nelson Institute of Tennis is holiday two coaching
clinics in the school holidays.
Clinic 1: September 29th & 30th from 9am-1pm both
days. $60 including morning tea for both days or $35 for
one day.
Clinic 2: October 4th & 5th from 9am-1pm both days.
$60 including morning tea for both days or $35 for one day.
Both clinics are run by qualified coaches with a maximum
of 8 children to one coach. There will be plenty of fun
tennis games, spot prizes and a Grasshoppers Tournament.

Enrolments are now open for Term 4 coaching. This will
commence the week beginning October 11th and runs for 8
weeks with the school term. All ages and abilities are
catered for (including adults).

SOME PROGRAMMES CLOSE THIS WEEK ! SO PLEASE GET YOUR REGISTRATIONS IN!
Nelson Central pupils have the opportunity to participate in sports teams throughout the school year. Notification of
start dates are published in the school newsletter and on the sports notice board located in the hallway between rooms 2
and 3. To participate in school teams children are required to complete a registration form for each sport and pay the
required registration fee. This must be done in terms 1 & 4 for summer sport and term 2 for winter sport. All children
are issued with a school sports uniform to play in. These must be returned to school at the end of each term.
Management/coaching of school teams is undertaken by parents/caregivers.
Term 4 Sports
Mini Soccer – Year 1-6. 5 aside soccer played on a small field. No goalies no offside. Mixed teams Games are 30
minutes and are played at Saxton Field Stoke on Tuesday between 4.30pm and 54.30pm. Starts Tuesday 26th October.
Cost: $5. Parental assistance required. Registrations available from sports notice boards located in hallway

Milo Have A Go Cricket Coaching Programme: - 5-8 year olds. An 8 week programme to introduce children to
cricket and the skill base needed to play the game. Some parental assistance required. Details will be advised on
receipt.
Kiwi Cricket – Year 1 and above. A follow on from The Milo Have a Go Cricket Coaching programme run by Nelson
Cricket term 4. Children play a game where all bat, bowl, wicket keep and field. Games are played at Saxton Field,
Stoke, Saturday commencing 9am 30th October.
Parental assistance required. Registrations available from sports notice boards located in hallway between rooms
2 and 3. To be placed in locked silver box located in school office foyer by Friday 15 th October.
Incrediball – Year 3 and above. The next step after Kiwi Cricket. Children play with a harder ball and wooden cricket
bat. Assists with the transition to hardball cricket. Games are played at Saxton Field, Stoke, commencing 9am 30th
October. Parental assistance required. Registrations available from sports notice boards located in hallway
between rooms 2 and 3. To be placed in locked silver box located in school office foyer by Friday 15 th October
Hardball Cricket – The progression from Incrediball. Traditional cricket played on Saturdays. Games are 25 overs per
innings. Games are played at various cricket venues. Central School home ground The Botanics. Start date Saturday
16 th October. Competition and teams remain the same as term 1.
Volleyball – Year 3,4,5,6 children. (Please note the age groups have changed from last year) Games are 30 minutes and
are played at Nelson Girls College Gymnasium on Thursdays between 4 and 6 pm. Competition commences Thursday
21st October and finishes on 9th December. Cost $30 per player. Parental assistance required to supervise teams
during game time. Registrations available from sports notice boards located in hallway between rooms 2 and 3.

Touch Rugby – Year 2 and above. 6 a side. Teams of 10-12. Games are played at Tahunanui playing field on Fridays
