Assigned Chapter(s): __________

Overview: For this assignment, you will analyze and present chapter(s) of Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglas an American Slave. Your presentation will consist of 3 components, each of which
should be prepared as a visual aid that you can display during your presentation.

1. Summarizing Assigned Chapter(s)

On a PowerPoint slide, you will summarize what your assigned chapter(s) were about. Since
there will be a test at the end of this unit, it is important to talk about significant events, people,
places, and just given an overview of what took place in your chapter(s). You can set up your
slides in bullet point form; whatever is the easiest and most efficient way to convey the
information that you read.

2. Passage Analysis
For the passage analysis component, you must select 3 important excerpts from the reading.
You must analyze the passage by explaining what it does in the text, along with why you chose
these 3 significant experts from the book. These excerpts should reflect one of the many themes
we talked about when listening to “Where is the Love” and after reading multiple excerpts in
stations. This portion of your project can be visually displayed in a PowerPoint slide or poster
board (or any way that displays the excerpts and rationales).

3. Song
Lastly, you will choose an appropriate song that accurately describes the message, emotions, or
theme that Fredrick Douglas is trying to convey and arise in you while reading. You will play the
song aloud in class and print off the lyrics for everyone to read as the song is playing (similarly to
what we did when we listened to and analyzed the song “Where is the Love”). If you email me
at exg124@francis.edu with an attachment of the lyrics, I can print the it out for you. (In 2nd
period- you will need to print off 15 copies. And in 6th period- you will need to print off 25
copies). As the song is playing, students will write down their thoughts and connect it to your
presentation. You will have the class say their thoughts aloud, and then you will present why
you chose the song, and the connections your group made with FD’s work to your song. I want
one annotated lyric sheet from each group; I want to read the connections that your group
made. This does not have to look formal… simply highlight, underline, and circle parts of the
songs that can be connected with the book, and write next to those sections the connections
you made and why (this does not have to be written in full sentences).
