ASSIGNMENT No. 1
Q.1 What are different components of listening? Highlight the unique importance of
listening in the natural sequence of language development. Also suggest some
practical measures to incorporate testing of listening in the process of assessment
and evaluation. (20)
Q.2 Discuss in detail the factors responsible for the neglect of teaching speaking skill in
our language classrooms. Also suggest some remedial measures to improve the
situation. (20)
Q.3 Differentiate between the following with the help of suitable examples. (20)
a) Acquisition and Learning
b) Competence and Performance
c) Fluency and Accuracy
d) Cohesion and Coherence
e) Finely tuned input and Roughly tuned input
Q.4 Discuss in detail the three stages in the development of oral skills and
comment on the prospective roles of teacher and students at each stage with
suitable activities. (20)
Q.5 Select a suitable text from the textbook of English prescribed for SSC level and
design four activities to show that language skills are not discrete rather integrative
in nature. (20)
ASSIGNMENT No. 2
(Project)

The 2nd assignment is a project. You are required to study the relevant area/conduct
research and prepare a brief report on your findings in the given area. You will then have
to submit one copy of the report to the tutor within the scheduled period and at the same
time present the report/essay in the 2nd Assignment Presentation Workshop (the
schedule/plan of the Presentations Workshop will be intimated by the tutor concerned or

the Regional Director). The compulsory presentation carries 100 marks: 40 marks for the
written report/essay and 60 for the presentation, and passing both components scoring 16
and 24 marks respectively is mandatory.

A few guidelines for the presentation and the written report:

a) The written report should have an introduction, body and conclusion. It should be
written in correct, clear and concise English.
b) It should be 5-8 double spaced typed/handwritten pages.
c) The presentation will be assessed and evaluated mainly on the basis of:
i. Contents of the assignment/report
ii. Communication skills
iii. Language accuracy
iv. Language fluency
v. Presentation style

You will prepare your project on one of the following topics. Your tutor will assign
different topics to different students during your classes. For example, if the number of
students in your class in 15, one topic may not be assigned to more than eight students.

1. Stages in a listening lesson:


Stage – i: Create expectations within the students
Stage – ii: Teacher sets a task, a gives a purpose for the listening
Stage – iii: Students listen & perform task
Stage – iv. Feedback
Stage – v. Follow-up task

Design a lesson plan which aims at enhancing students’ listening skills at HSSC level and
incorporate the above mentioned stages. You can make use of audio – video recorded
texts to make your lesson interesting and innovative. Critically reflect on the usefulness
of your lesson plan by assessing students’ listening comprehension to find out whether or
not you have achieved your desired learning outcomes.

There are many potential benefits of using authentic materials in the language classroom.
Design a questionnaire for English language teachers at SSC level for the prospective use
of the same and collect information that how authentic materials can be effectively used
to enhance students’ reading skills. In the light of their suggestions, prepare a lesson plan
for SSC level and implement it in the class. After implementing the lesson, get feedback
from the students regarding the effectiveness of this strategy to enhance reading skills.
Refine your lesson plan in the light of the feedback for further improvement.
