Three Useful Techniques
In the film and video editing industry, editing for a story, good music, and color
consideration are useful tips used by professionals.

- As the editor, you are the storyteller, every cut, transition, sound effect, and
graphic you use needs to tell a bigger story. Editing is an opportunity to take
your audience on a journey.
- A film is visuals and audio so it is important to focus on the audio just as much as
the visual. Licensing good music from a royalty free music provider is a good way
to find the perfect audio.
- Color grading is another way to tell the story, it can give the footage a color ‘look’
and convey a message or tone in your story. Color correction is another
important part of video editing, you will always need to do some basic
post-processing to get all of your footage consistent.
Award Winning Professionals

Margaret Sixel is a South African-born, Australian film editor.

Sixel is best known for her editing work on films Babe: Pig in the
City, Happy Feet, and Mad Max: Fury Road. In 2016, she won
Best Film Editing at the Oscars for Mad Max: Fury Road. In her
editing, she managed to tell a visual story with fast cuts that
progressed the story. Sixel wanted every shot in Mad Max: Fury
Road to do just this so she applied the rule, no similar shots,
throughout the film. When editing, Sixel always has an intention
and follows her intention while editing. With a vision for what
the editing should achieve, she is able to make choice that take
the audience by surprise.
Award Winning Professionals

John Gilbert is a New Zealand film editor who has edited 17 feature
films as well as television shows and short films. He is best known
for his work on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
and Hacksaw Ridge. In 2017, he was awarded Best Film Editing at
the Oscars for Hacksaw Ridge. When editing, Gilbert has assistants
break the footage down into scenes for him and then he looks
through the circled takes to start with. Through doing this, he gets
an idea as to the shape of the scene and where he will use each
type of shot to best use the coverage he has. Along with doing this,
Gilbert finds the key moments in the scene to make note of the
magic in the performances. As he starts to piece it together, the
shape he envisioned begins to evolve into the film.
Interest in Video Editing

Video editing interests me because I like the idea of being able to express
my creativity into a film or video. As a video editor, you are able to tell the
story of the film however, you feel is best. Video editing seems like a fun
creative outlet in entertainment world that I would enjoy being a part of
someday.
Thank You!
