Lesson Overview: Number of the week

Students will be asked to individually find the number 8 from a set of numbers posted on the
wall. They will then stick the 8 that they retrieved onto a mini white board and will write the
number 8 on the larger whiteboard. When each student has completed these tasks, the line
leader will stand up and everyone will assist him or her in counting the number of 8’s on the
mini white board. The line leader will then count the number of kids. They will see that there
are the same number of 8’s as the number of kids.
Each student will then have the opportunity to shake a bag and guess how many objects they
believe to be inside of the bag (8). The class will count the objects together as a group and then
individually, in order to practice connecting counting to cardinality.
At this point, students will move to their tables and complete a math art project pertaining to
the weeks theme (day & night). They will each be given 8 stars all labeled 1-8 and will have to
place the stars in order, glue them onto a piece of black construction paper, and color the stars
(color identification).

1. Learning Goals/Objectives

What student learning goals/objectives do Which indicators of the Arizona content

you have for this lesson? standards does this lesson address?
 Students will be able to correctly
identify the number 8 from a set of  K.CC.A.1 Count to 100 by ones
numbers  K.CC.B.4 Connect counting to
 Students will be able to write the cardinality a. say the numbers in
number 8 independently or with order and pair one number with one
hand-over-hand assistance object
 Students will be able to count from
numbers 1 to 8
 Students will be able to count 8
objects and understand the 1 to 1
correspondence between the number
and the object
 Students will be able to place the
numbers 1-8 in the correct order
2. Methodology
What instructional strategies will you use?
Constructions Library Research
Cooperative Learning Peer Editing
Discussion/Questioning Practicum
Problem Solving Field Study
Reflection/Response Graphic Organizers
Independent Learning Role Playing
Laboratory Viewing/Listening/Answering
Practice/Drill Experiment
Lecture Discovery
Reporting Journal
Simulations Other: Art

Why did you choose these strategies/methods?

 Problem Solving- Students have to problem solve when identifying the number 8 from
a set of numbers, counting 8 objects using a 1 to 1 correspondence, and deciding the
order of numbers 1-8. These activities make them think critically about numbers.
 Independent Learning- Students will independently identify the number 8, count 8
objects, and place the numbers 1-8 in the correct order. This method was chosen in
order to assess each child’s skills and to ensure participation. Assistance will still be
used when necessary.
 Practice Drill- 8 is the “number of the week” and students will be working with this
number and practicing these skills daily for the entirety of the week.
 Viewing/Listening/Answering- Teacher writes number on the board, shows each
student a cut-out # 8, and tells each student ”8”. Students repeat back “8” and then
identify and write the number on their own.
 Art- Students will glue on 8 stars (each with a number written on them) in the correct
order. Majority of students enjoy coloring, cutting, and gluing. Art makes math
practice more enjoyable for most of these students.

How will you group students for instruction?

 Whole group, small group, and individual
Activity/Step
1. Activating background knowledge
 Students have experience with the number 8, as well as with counting (practiced
multiple times daily)
 Students will be gluing 8 stars on a sheet of paper. The stars activate their knowledge
and correspond to the weeks theme (Night and Day)
2. Gain Student Attention
 Showing enthusiasm about the number 8
 Asking students questions individually
 Giving praise and positive feedback
3. Demonstrate…
Modeling- Writing the # 8 on the whiteboard board, as well as retrieving and showing
each student the cut-out #8 sign.
Guided Practice-
Counting with students during the whole group object counting, before letting them
each count the objects individually
Assistance given to students who are in need.
 Students can match number if unable to identify independently
 Assisting with counting to 8 by using verbal prompts or sign
 Writing #8- using hand-over-hand technique, students copying or imitating the #
 Instructor or aides can assist with ordering numbers by using verbal prompts or
picture matching
Independent Practice- Students will be given the opportunity to identify the number 8,
count to 8, use 1 to 1 correspondence, and place the numbers 1-8 in the correct order all
independently. Assistance only given when needed based on the individual and their skill
level
4. Bring closure to lesson- Wrap up by having each student once again verbally say “8” and
through motor counting- Clap 8 times, stomp feet 8 times, etc.
5. Evaluating how learning has occurred-Observation and asking questions directly to each
student.

3. Materials
What Materials will you use?
Teacher Student
 White board and expo marker  Cut out letter signs (6, 7, & 8) that
 Cut out #8 sign students will identify the number
 Bag math- paper bag and objects 8 from
inside bag (stars)  White board and expo marker
 Colored construction paper
 Star outlines
 Scissors, glue, crayons
 Bag math- paper bag, and objects
inside bag that students will count

4. Assessment/Evaluation
