the

we
have
seen
tremendous

in
some
of
our

Our
charitable

doing
tremendously
well.
Our

preparing
for
another

Every

take

of
the

as
it
is
a
phenomenal

EASTER 2018
Dear Brother Knights,
In the 1950’s, the Dominican Father Jacques Loew was a worker-priest in the port of Marseilles,
France. One day he challenged his fellow stevedores in the port to make a synthesis of their
Christianity in such a way that it could be written in the space of a postage stamp and summarize it
in just three words. His witness bore fruit when the stevedores in unison responded, “Christ is
risen!”
Yes, that says it all, Christ is risen. There is no better way to describe the Easter mystery except by
those three words, Christ is risen. Christ is risen, indeed.
As Saint Paul tells us, “If Christ was not raised from the dead our faith would be in vain.” It is Christ
who in Resurrection once and for all conquers sin and death, so that no one who ever comes to
believe in Him would ever have to suffer eternal death and also anyone believing in Him would be
raised to life on the last day. The world has never received any greater promise with greater
assurance. Christ the Son is the living God who died for the salvation of all humankind that invites
us to enter the mystery of salvation by declaring to the whole world that He is risen.
We live our declaration of the resurrection in our daily lives just as the stevedores of Marseilles.
Christ is proclaimed as risen not only from the pulpits of our churches, but also from our homes,
offices, schools and all places of work. Your work and commitment as Knights of Columbus
proclaims to the world that Christ is risen. The transforming power of the resurrection enables us to
turn evil to good, to overcome sin and all the obstacles put in the path of a happy existence.
During the time after Easter, perhaps we can resolve to proclaim Christ is risen more loudly and
clearly than ever before. Brother Knights, please consider those circumstances in need of
transformation and change, circumstances calling for conversion. If only we have the courage to
say Christ is risen, we will rise along with Him. We will be able to transform and to change the
world in which we live.
SUBJECT: Star Council per capita Credit of $4.50 for this fraternal year, 2017-‐2018
As
in
the
past
three
fraternal
years,
the
Supreme
Knight
announced
this
past
weekend
at
the
Mid-‐Year
meeting
of
State
Deputies
in
Washington,
DC,
that
the
per
capita
credit
of
$4.50
will
again
be
offered
this
fraternal
year
to
all
councils
achieving
Star
Council
status.
This
per
capita
credit
applies
only
for
billable
members
in
the
United
States,
its
territories,
and
Canada.
Billable
members
are
all
members
except
for
honorary
life
and
disability
exemptions.
We
encourage
you
to
communicate
this
incentive
to
all
of
your
councils
and
inspire
them
to
attain
any
one
of
the
levels
of
Star
Council.
The
Star
Council
program
is
designed
to
help
a
council
focus
on
all
of
the
key
areas
that
fulfill
the
vision
of
our
founder,
the
Venerable
Father
Michael
J.
McGivney:
membership
growth,
charitable
program
outreach,
and
protection
for
families.
It
is
our
hope
that
this
incentive,
which
will
provide
direct
financial
benefits
for
councils,
will
allow
us
to
achieve
a
record
number
of
Star
Councils
this
fraternal
year!

Here’s
how

you

and
on

ten

If
you

The

PRO
LIFE
New York State Pro-Life Chairman Rick Kenney
“Love Saves Lives”
LAST YEAR, IN A HISTORIC FIRST, IT WAS VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE WHO SPOKE
AT THE RALLY PRIOR TO THE PRO-LIFE MARCH AND DECLARED “LIFE IS WINNING.” THIS
YEAR, PRESIDENT TRUMP ADDRESSED THE RALLY AND SAID: “BECAUSE OF YOU, TENS OF
THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS HAVE BEEN BORN AND REACHED THEIR FULL GOD-GIVEN
POTENTIAL.” PERHAPS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE PAUL RYAN SAID IT BEST: “TRUTH IS ON
OUR SIDE. LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION, SCIENCE IS ON OUR SIDE. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE
PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT IS ON THE RISE BECAUSE WE HAVE LOVE ON OUR SIDE.” RECALL THAT
THE THEME OF THIS YEAR’S RALLY WAS “LOVE SAVES LIVES.”
AT THE VIGIL MASS, CARDINAL DOLAN REMINDED ELECTED OFFICIALS “WE HOLD
THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.” DOES OUR
CONSTITUTION IN FACT DENY THE EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAW TO THE WEAKEST
AND MOST VULNERABLE MEMBERS OF THE HUMAN FAMILY? OUR ANSWER MUST BE
THAT EVERYONE COUNTS – FROM CONCEPTION TO NATURAL DEATH. THE ARGUMENTS IN
ROE v WADE TURN OUR BEST MORAL TRADITIONS UPSIDE DOWN, EFFECTIVELY GIVING
PREFER-ENCE TO THE CLAIMS OF THE STRONG OVER THOSE OF THE WEAK. THINK ABOUT
IT: UTTER HELPLESSNESS DEMANDS UTTER PROTECTION. ANY OTHER INTERPRETATION IS
A SELF-DESTROYING CONCEPTION OF “EQUALITY.”
TO CONCLUDE, I URGE YOU NOW TO GO FORTH, ARMED WITH THIS INFORMATION,
REENERGIZED, AND READY. SCIENCE IS ON OUR SIDE. BASIC UNIVERSALLY SHARED
PRINCIPLES OF JUSTICE AND EQUALITY ARE ON OUR SIDE. REMEMBER ALSO, THAT
ELECTIONS MATTER! WE MUST ALL PUSH HARDER TO PROMOTE THE DEFINITION OF
HEALTH, NOT VIABILITY OR MURDER. WE MUST HUMANIZE THE UNBORN CHILD – PAIN,
DISMEMBER-
MENT, FETAL REMAINS CARRIED OUT AS SO MUCH GARBAGE. WE MUST SHOW THAT THE
PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT CARES MORE ABOUT WOMEN (AND THEIR BABIES) THAN THE
ABORTION RIGHTS MOVEMENT. WE MUST ENGAGE THE DEBATE VIGOROUSLY, BUT
ALWAYS WITH CHARITY AND CIVILITY. AND WE MUST NEVER STOP PRAYING. JESUS SAID
“I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND YES, THE LIFE!”

Food for Families:
Our Supreme Council encourages our local councils to participate in the Food for Families
Program by offering financial rebates to councils and assemblies. For every $500 or 1,000 pounds
that a council or assembly donates to a parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen
they will refund $100 up to $500 a Columbian year. Supreme will cumulate your contributions of
food and/or monetary donations for the fraternal year. There is no need to send in a refund request
every time a contribution is made. Participating councils must be in the Food for Families
Reimbursement Program (Form #10057) and send to Supreme.
Our councils have done great collecting and donating food for their local food pantries, food
banks or soup kitchens, especially during Thanksgiving, Christmas and also the 40 cans for forty
days program during Lent.
Supporting Catholic Education is very important for the future of Our Catholic Church. New
York State Council’s Matching Funds Program for Catholic Schools and Faith Formation Religious
Education is a way our councils can support Catholic Education.
New York State Council Matching Funds Program; If your council donates $500 or more to a
Catholic school, New York State Council will match up to $1,000, and if your council donates $250
or more to Faith Formation Religious Education, New York State Council will match up to $500.
Last year and the first half of our current Colombian Year your council’s Catholic Schools and Faith
Formation Religious Education had to wait until the C&B program ended on December 2, 2017 to
start matching funds.
Our members have supported many events that were held by New York State Council, Local
Chapters and your councils throughout our great State of New York for Catholic schools’ support.
External Fundraising:
The New State Council has held 2 events for Catholic Education one at a NY Yankee game
and the other at a Brooklyn Nets game. In August the State Council hosted an event at a SI
Yankee game for the Wheelchair Mission. On March 22, 2018 there is a fundraiser for Special
Olympics at the NY Islander game. On May 12, 2018 the NYS Council is having a fundraiser for
Catholic Education at the Yankee game. Everyone that purchases a ticket from us will receive a NY
Yankee hat at the with the 3rd Degree logo on the side. Your External Fundraising Coordinators
flyers with more information on how to purchase tickets will be available.

"The St. Bernard Knights of Columbus, Council # 14269 celebrated the New Year by making
a $30,000 donation to the parish and a $5,000 donation to the Academy. These donations
are the result of the Council's year-round fundraising efforts. During the presentation, the
Knights reaffirmed their ongoing commitment and support to the parish of St. Bernard and
the community. The Council stressed that the Knights are committed to seeing Catholic life
in Bergen Beach and Mill Basin remains vibrant and visible, and that the parish remains as
the center of Catholic life in this community".
