COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a study of Western Civilization from The Reformation to the modern period. Developments in
technology, economics, religious developments, cultural developments and social developments will be studied.

As a result of this course, you will be able to


 Identify the major periods in the history of western civilization
 Analyze the important political, economic, social, intellectual and religious forces that helped shaped
these periods
 Demonstrate basic research skills by locating and using source materials

GRADING
In this semester, there will be 2 tests and a final. The tests will be non-cumulative and each test covers readings
and lectures from the preceding test. There will be NO MAKE UPS for missed tests. If you miss any test, it
will be scored as a zero.

There will also be short quizzes. Quizzes are not planned for specific times and you should be prepared to take
one at any time. Quizzes will come from the textbook, lectures, and supplemental readings.

Through the course of the semester, you will be responsible for homework assignments. Each will include
analysis of an article or a primary source. The homework will be posted to Moodle and each will have its own
due date. No homework will be accepted after it’s posted due date.

In addition to the tests and quizzes, you are expected to turn in a final paper (information will follow later in the
term) and participate in class. No final paper will be accepted after it’s posted due date.

MAKE UP POLICY:
There are NO MAKE UP tests, homework or quizzes allowed in this course. If you miss a test, homework or
quiz it will be scored a zero.

If you miss a test, homework or quiz do not request a make up or ask to turn in late.

ATTENDANCE
More than 2 absences in this course will bring your grade down. Each absence after 2 (unless excused for
extenuating circumstances per the discretion of the professor) will bring your grade down one letter grade.

You are expected to come to class on a daily basis in order to provide yourself with the information that will be
necessary to complete this course. In addition, you are expected to come to class on time and stay throughout
the class period. Leaving late and early will earn you an absence.

If you will miss class due to religious observances, please talk to me so I may ensure an excused absence. If
you do not speak to me, I cannot excuse the absence.

CLASS PARTICIPATION
Class participation is earned through turning in a question at the end of each class period. You may also earn
additional participation points by participating in class discussions.

BEHAVIOR
All phones must be turned off and put away during class time. If I find you using a phone during class, I your
class participation for the day will be a zero.

Students are expected to be on time for class and prepared with the materials you will need. Be on time! It is
disrespectful and rude to enter class late and cause a commotion as you find a seat and take out your materials.
In the event that you are late due to unforeseen circumstances please do not cross in front of the professor. Take
a seat in the first row and prepare yourself with your materials.

Be aware of fellow students. Debate and discussion is encouraged however respect your fellow student’s
differing opinions.

GENERAL INFORMATION
You are responsible for the material covered or assigned while you are not in class. It is up to you to locate
notes and check the syllabus to discover what was covered in class that day.

Respectful decorum is required in class. Be on time, take notes, do not sleep and conduct yourself properly to a
classroom setting.

Students experiencing difficulty with this course should acquaint themselves with the services of the Tutoring
Center

The Bergen Community College Library provides extensive support for research. Please utilize it for your final
papers.

There is NO EXTRA CREDIT assignment for missing or undesired grades.

accept emails from addresses other than your Bergen Community Email address.

A daily listing of cancelled classes is announced on the College website. Whenever possible, an email will be
sent informing students of my absence.
