Abide in him. Following Christ is not only an act.
but an attitude, one that covers a lifetime. Abiding
in him means continual and ever-increasing fellowship.
It implies living in his presence through faith, prayer,
and the Word of God, and in this abiding fellowship
with our Master- will come that force, freshness, fra-
grance, and filjer in spiritual life which will be the best
possible means of attractiveness in soul winning. As
water never rises above its level, so our work for God
never rises above the level of our fellowship with him.
We must "dwell with the King for his work," and in
so doing we shall have his Spirit, his |x>wer, and his
blessing.

five passages, four having one and one the other Greek
word translated *'love." The former word implies un-
selfish love, a love which does not seek for any return
(John 13:23; 19:26; 21:7, 20), and in each case it
is particularly interesting that the literal rendering is
"whom Jesus kept on loving." His interest and affec-
tion for his young follower went out continually and
showed itself in a variety of ways for the benefit of
John. But the other passage has its own beautiful
suggestion (20:2), for it gives us the idea of our
Lord's perfect humanity in desiring the return of love
from his follower. There was nothing unworthy in
this yearning for a return of love, but everything that
was pure and true in the desire to find himself loved
by his disciple. Here, again, the reference is equally
suggestive, "whom Jesus kept on loving" (with a cling-
ing love). Years afterwards this Apostle was able to
say "We love, because he first loved us."

ship. The Holy Spirit alone tnakes this real, for after
being introduced to God we have "access by one Spirit
unto the Father," whereby communion with God begins
and continues. Everything in connection with prayer
and the other means of grace is associated with the
Holy Spirit as the medium of communication and the
guarantee of blessing. The third is Character, for life
must be expressed in practice, and grace is needed to
produce this eflfect. Here, again, the Holy Spirit
makes character possible and real, for he abides in the
soul, producing "the fruit of the Spirit," and by con-
stant revelation of Christ strengthens the believer in
the inner man, and transforms him into the image of
the Son of God. There is scarcely anything clearer or
more emphatic in Scripture than the Holy Spirit's rela-
tion to the individual, for his action covers our whole
life. So it was, we are perfectly sure, with the Apostle
John, and so it must be with each of us today.

the Lord and his Spirit, his Hfe was altogether changed.
He illustrated the transformation of Grace. "Instead
of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of
the briar shall come up the myrtle tree" (Isaiah
55:13). Grace is still ready and able to transform
lives and to change the "lion" into the "lamb." But
Grace has its intensifications as well as its transforma-
tions. It does not take away from human nature any-
thing that is right and true, but increases, deepens, in-
tensifies all our natural force. So it was with the
Apostle John. All the powers which he possessed be-
fore his conversion were taken up by his Master and
used in Christian service. It has been well said that
the Christian needs two births in his Christian life.
He must first of all be changed from the natural to
the supernatural by the ew Birth of the Spirit. Then
he must be born once more by being changed again
into the natural, so that the supernatural may express
itself in ordinary natural ways, as the man surrenders
everything to God and places himself at his Lord's
disposal.

Chapter 13 : 1-17
The record of Christ's public ministry closes with
chapter 12, and with chapter 13 the second division
of the Gospel opens. In the first five chapters (13-17)
we have the record of the last conversations of our
Lord with his disciples, in which he revealed himself
more fully to them and elicited their deepening faith
(16:30). In chapter 13 he shows his love in action,
and then, after the departure of Judas, he manifested
his love in words (chapters 14-17). This occurred on
the eve of his death, and the various events between
the visit of the Greeks on the Tuesday ( 12 : 20) will
