Written by a group of well known authorities in the field of pneumatic conveying hailing
from South Africa, Austtalia. USA and Germany, this book is remarkably coherent and
consistent. There is an even spread between theory and practice. It is designed, as noled in the
Pnface. "to cater for a wide cmss-section of readen, including practising engineers, research
students and plant operdting personnel.". This book contains full details of all aspects of
pneumatic conveying technologies as well as Lghnologies of feeding the systems and of
separating the t r a n s p o d panicles and the carrier gas.

This book consists of 14 well-written chaplcrs. The first four chapters deal essentially
with fundamentals of pneumatic conveying, single phase flow, fluid and panicle dynamics and
forces on moving panicles. Only the required theory is presenled in a lucid manner. Tables,
figures and empirical conelations for design and analysis are presenled in detail along with
appropriate illustrative examples which facilitates self-learning.

Chapter 5 outlines the differences between vertical and horiwntal wnveying while chapter
6 discusses in depth the principles of pneumatic wnveying. Example calculations arc given for
calculation of the system pressure drop.

Chapter 7 is an excellent summary of ihe feeding systems. Classification and selection

crileria are discusred. An excellent discussion is included of high prwure feeding systems.
Flow of solids under gravity is the subject of chapter 8. Various standpipe systems are classified
and dirusred. Equations perlaining to different modes of flow in standpipes are presented and

illustrated. An intercsting feature of this chapter is the analysis of two caw studies of industrial
standpipes -one for underflow and the other for overflow standpipe.

With the r e n t surge of interest in dense phase and long distance pneumatic wnveying,
high pressure systems have bewme important e s p i a l l y to transport bulk materials over
distances in excess of 1OOO metres. Chapter 9 considers these cases.

Chapter 10 is concerned with selection, design and analysis of gas-particle separators -

cyclone separators and fabric fillers. The design of a cyclone is illustrated by way of an
wample.

Chapter I I is a catch-all t y p of chapter covering such diverse topics as flow of solid3

from silos; wear; ancillary equipment etc. Conml of pneumatic lnnspopon is covered in chapter
12.

Stability analyses with Taylor series linearization and Liapunov's method are presented
briefly.

lnsUumenlation (chapter 13) is a key panof any Ifansport system, to measureand monitor
the flow conditions from delivery to transpopon to rcmvery. Finally, chapter 14 provides
guidelines and worked examples of complete system design. This is a penicularly useful chapter
from a practical viewpoint.

I found this text useful and very readable. It is strongly reammended for any one
involved with m h , development of design of pneumatic banspopon systems. AU chapters
contain extensive but selective bibliographies.
