The Balanced Approach to Fire Protection

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 3

One globally applied principle for fire safety:
Compartmentation (fire compartments)
The spread of fire can be restricted by dividing a building into separate
compartments with fire-resistive walls and floors—increasing the
availability of escape routes for occupants.

Test Methods

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 5

ASTM E 814 / UL 1479 Test Standards for
Through Penetration Firestop Systems
F-Rating
The duration of time in which flames do not pass through the system

T-Rating
The time it takes for the non-fire side to reach approximately 400 ºF
(325ºF above ambient)

To receive either rating the firestop must pass the hose stream test

Optional Ratings:
L-Rating
The amount of air leakage through the firestop system at ambient and 400°F

W-Rating
Determines the effectiveness of a firestop system to restrict the flow of
Water.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 6

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 73

First, prepare Z-Frame to fit perimeter of opening per previous
instructions. Apply Putty Roll to inside of Z-Frame and position in the
opening as shown above. The frame will be placed along both sides
and top of opening. No frame is needed along the bottom.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 74

Attach the Z-Frame to gypsum wall with 2 5/8” self tapping drywall
screws. For solid concrete/block walls use 3/16” x 1 ¼” concrete
screws.
Frame combos come with all appropriate fasteners.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 75

The opening is now framed on all three sides and ready for
installation of firestop materials.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 76

Apply a single layer of Firestop Putty Roll across each layer of cable
and remove the backing paper. Putty should be vertically in line with
each Firestop Board that will be installed.
Note: Firestop Putty Pad may be used in place of Putty Roll to cover
cable area inside of Z-Frame.
ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 77
ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 78
Place Fire Blocks at 5” depth within opening around cables. The 5”
depth of the Blocks matches the 5” depth of the Z-Frame.
The assembly is now ready for the T-Bar separator.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 79

Next, measure the width of the opening and cut the T-Bar
separator using snips.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 80

Trim off front perforated edge at ends of T-Bar to ease future
Z-Frame latch installation.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 81

Completed T- Bar cut.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 82

Place the T-bar separator in position over the Fire Blocks.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 83

Apply the Putty Roll to all three back edges of the Z-Frame and to the
back edge of the T-Bar separator above Fire Blocks.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 84

The opening is now ready to receive the first Firestop Board.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 85

The Firestop Board can be shaped just
like a piece of gypsum board.

First, score the line…

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 86

…then break the board along the scored line.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 87

Finish cutting the back side.
The finished size of the Firestop Board shall not be more than ¼ “ less
in width (1/8” preferred), and shall be about ¼” larger in height than
opening size to compress Fire Blocks during Board installation.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 88

Place the spacers along the edges of the first Firestop Board at
maximum 8” center to center spacing around perimeter. These
spacers maintain the separation of the two Firestop Boards, one at the
front and one at the back spaced at 5”.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 89

Insert bottom edge of the first Firestop Board (inside piece) into
opening against back flange of T-Bar. Then press top of Board into
opening and push flush with back edge of Z-Frame.
Note that it is just a ‘friction fit’ installation.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 90

Apply 1” depth of Firestop Putty at any gaps around Firestop Board
exceeding 1/8” in width.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 91

Position the second Firestop Board into opening against the spacers,
flush with front surface of wall. After installation, apply 1” depth of
Firestop Putty at any gaps around outside Firestop Board exceeding
1/8” in width.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 92

Attach the latches to the
Z-Frame at 8” center to center
(every other latch hole). Turn
and lock latches in place so
they extend over the Firestop
Board and each end of T-Bar.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 93

Apply 1/8” thick x 1” wide Firestop Putty in between Z-Frame latches
around periphery of Firestop Board. Firestop Putty to be centered
over seam between Firestop Board and Z-Frame. Firestop Putty is
not required under latches.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 94

Install T-Bar Latches along T-Bar at max. 10” center to center spacing
such that the sliding latch extends equally over the Fire Blocks and
Firestop Board. Apply Putty Roll over T-Bar and Latches once
installed.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 95

As an additional smoke seal, apply ½” dome of Putty around
cables at Fire Block interface.

ATT Firestop Training (12/2007) 96

Note the extra spacer is bent
and used in upper right hand
corner of the opening. This can
be installed when the outside
Board is put in place.

This can act as a ‘handle’

to help remove the
Firestop Board when
accessing the opening.
