SECTION “A” (MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS)
1. Select the most appropriate answer for each form the given options:
NOTE: Attempt any Six part questions from this section. All questions carry equal marks.
i. An aluminum sphere having radius 250 mm is heated from zero to 100 degrees. Find the
final diameter, final volume and increase in volume of the sphere. Assume the linear
expansion coefficient of aluminum to be 0.000024/OC.
ii. If 1.07 x 10^6 electrons are removed from two similar charged spheres, find the mass of
each sphere so that the electrostatic repulsion is balanced by the gravitational force.
iii. Prove that the rate of heat production in each of the two resistors connected in parallel is
inversely proportional to the resistances.
iv. Derive expression for a couple acting on a current-carrying rectangular coil held in a
uniform magnetic field.
v. A field of 4 x 10^-4 T is produced inside a 400 turn toroid using a current of 6 A. Find the
average radius of the toroid. µO = 4π x 10^-7 T.
vi. A charged particle is accelerated through a potential difference of 4 x 10^6 V. It enters a
region of uniform magnetic field of 0.4 T with an angle of 45O. If the diameter of the circular
path of the particle is 102 cm and the charge on the particle is that of an electron, find the
mass of the particle.
vii. Establish the theoretical relationship between the coefficients of linear and cubical
expansion.
viii. Prove that in parallel combination of three resistors, the sum of the individual conductance
is equal to the equivalent conductance.
ix. A 20 square cm parallel plate capacitor has a spacing of 4 cm between the plates. The
capacitance of the capacitor is increased by 1.26 pF, if a dielectric slab, of dielectric
constant 2 and of the same area, but of suitable thickness, is slipped between the plates.
Find the thickness of the slab.
x. What is the difference between potential difference and EMF? Also give their relationship.
xi. Show that Cp – Cv = R.
3. a) Establish relation for pressure of an ideal gas in terms of density and mean square speed of
molecules.
b) State and apply a law to find the electric intensity at a point outside a uniformly charged sphere.
4. a) On what principle does a transformer work?
Give working of a transformer with the help of a labelled diagram.
b) Derive relations between:
i. EMF and number of turns ii. EMF and current
5. a) State First Law of thermodynamics and explain on its basis:
i. Isobaric Process ii. Isochoric Process
b) Describe the method for finding charge to mass ratio of an electron. Derive the relevant
mathematical expression.
OR
State Ampere’s Law. Using it, derive an expression for the magnetic field of induction inside a
long current-carrying solenoid.
