Text Book Richard G. Budynas, J. Keith Nisbett, Shigley’s Mechanical

Engineering Design, 10th Edition, McGraw-Hill Education,
ISBN-13: 978-0-07-339820-4
Prerequisites PHY 121, ETT 220/L & MFE 126/L

Course Objective  Design machine elements such as shafts, gears, bearings, screws
and fasteners etc.
 Integrate machine elements to form mechanical system
components for practical applications
 Reinforce the concepts learned in strength of materials and
apply them in the design of machine elements
 Reinforce the concept of imposing maximum space utilization
and potential of materials
Course Outcome Students will develop fundamental theoretical knowledge on design
and integration of machine elements. The knowledge gained from this
course will allow students to design machine components for practical
applications, and formulate/solve relevant engineering problems. This
course will also improve students’ scientific communication skills
through enhancement of their scientific knowledge. By encouraging
students to deliver assignments on time & maintain originality in their
work, students will develop professional and ethical responsibilities.
ABET Criterion 3:
a) Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and
engineering
b) Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet
desired needs
c) Ability to identify, formulate & solve engineering problems
d) Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
e) Ability to communicate effectively

Course Policies Students are expected to attend class regularly and late arrival (past 10
min) is not acceptable. It is the students’ responsibility to print any
uploaded materials and take down notes in class. If a student misses a
class, the student is responsible for class notes and there will be no
make-up class. Late assignments will not be accepted and there will
be no make-up exams/quizzes. Zero credit will be given for the missed
assignment or exam/quiz. Late assignment or make-up exam is only
acceptable in case of a family emergency or medical reasons but proper
documentation is required. Please notify the instructor ahead of time
(before missing due dates for assignment or exam) if you will miss a
class for a medical reason or personal emergency to make
accommodations. The use of computer or electronic device during class
hours is limited to course applications only with permission from the
instructor. All exams are closed book/notes and use of internet is not
allowed. Always bring you calculator in the class since use of a laptop
or cell phone as a substitute for calculator will not be allowed. If you
have questions regarding homework or exam/quiz grades please do so
within a week from the time the graded material has been returned.
After this timeframe it will be too late to ask questions. Students are
responsible to check blackboard and Cal Poly email regularly. Bring
pen, paper and calculator to take down notes and solve problems.
Homework should be submitted in engineering paper and written
work must be legible and clear. Illegible handwriting will not be
graded. All steps for mathematical problems should be shown.

Academic It is expected that the assignments and exams reflect a student’s

Misconduct original work. Academic misconduct will not be tolerated and university
policy for academic misconduct (Student Conduct & Discipline) will be
strictly imposed. Copying from anyone else’s work or from the solution
manual for assignments will be considered as plagiarism. Talking,
discussion or exchange or comparison of papers are not permitted
during exams. Academic misconduct may also result in failure to pass
the course and the university taking disciplinary action. The instructor
is mandated to report any academic misconduct.

Students with Students who wish to request for accommodations please inform the
disabilities instructor. The university’s Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides
assistance to students with disability, so please contact them as soon
as possible. They are located in building 9, room 103 or you can reach
them via phone at (909) 869-3333.
