SOP of Angle Grinding (For Grinding)

This SOP is design to assist you to create a simple procedure for the safe operation of a particular
machine or type of equipment.
1. Installing tool attachment :
a. Look attention the specification of the Angle Grinding.

b. Understand the symbols that shown at the equipment.

c. Knowing the function of the tools (Angle Grinding). For this focus the tools is
used for grinding.
d. Check the power supply that would be used.
e. Installing side grip (handle). Always be sure that the side grip is installed securely
before operation.

f. Installing wheel guard (accessory). The wheel guard must be fitted on the tool so
that the closed side of the guard always points toward operator.
g. Installing depressed centre grinding wheel (Multi disc). Mount the inner flange
onto the spindle. Fit the wheel or disc on the inner flange and screw the lock nut
onto the spindle.

h. Installing cut-off wheel. To tighten the lock nut, press the shaft lock firmly so that
the spindle cannot revolve, then use the lock nut wrench and surely tighten
clockwise.
2. Setting up tool :
a. Inspect the angle grinder to ensure that the chassis is intact i.e. no crack or part
loose.
b. Inspect the body of the grinder and the grinder electrics to ensure there is no
build-up of conductive dust (such as carbon) from previous use that could cause
the motor to arc.
c. Inspect the disc and disc guard. Make sure that they are in place and secure.
d. Ensure that the disc or wheel is not chipped. cracked, glazed or damaged in any
way that could cause it to shatter or ‘explode’,
e. Check the handle(s) to ensure that they are secure and not damaged,
f. Check to see that the test tag on the power cord is up-to-date and the ‘on-off’
and/or ‘dead man’ switch is in good working order, and
g. Conduct a ‘test start’ to check the angle grinder for balance and vibration. If
unusual and/or excessive vibration is encountered during the test or at any time
during use, immediately stop work, unplug the unit, remove the disc and inspect it
and the angle grinder for damage or incorrect mounting. If you are unable to
locate and correct the problem, seek advice from your supervisor regarding repair
or replacement of the disc or angle grinder.

3. Operating tool :
a. Always be sure that the tool is switched off and unplugged before adjusting or
checking function on the tool.
 b. Never actuate the shaft lock when the spindle moving.

c. Press the shaft lock to prevent spindle rotation when installing or removing
accessories.
d. Before the plugging in the tool, always check to see that the switch trigger
actuates properly and returns to the “OFF” position when released.

For tool with lock-on switch,

for tool with the lock-off switch, for tool with the lock on and lock-off switch.
e. Hold the grinder firmly with two hands and ensure that you will be able to
maintain your balance throughout the job,
f. Maintain the appropriate pressure on the object to avoid damaging the wheel or
overheating the object,
g. Avoid allowing the wheel to rest on one spot for too long. This could the work to
burn or the wheel to crack or ‘explode’,
h. Where possible do the work at waist height,
i. Maintain the grinding at 15’ to 30’ angle to the work piece,
j. Allow the grinder to reach full speed before commencing work,
k. Allow the grinder to do the work, do not use excessive work,
l. Allow the disc to stop completely before putting the grinder down, and
m. Always lay the grinder down with the disc facing upward.

4. Maintaining the tool :

 a. Always be sure that the tool is switched off and unplugged before attempting to
perform inspection or maintenance.

b. The tool and its air vents have to be kept clean. Regularly clean the tool’s air
vents or whenever the vents start to become obstructed.
c. Replacing carbon brushes. When the resin insulating tip inside the carbon is
exposed to contact the commutator, it will automatically shut off the motor. When
this occurs, both carbon brushes should be replaced. Keep the carbon brushes
clean and free to slip in the holders. Both carbon brushes should be replaced at the
same time. Use only identical carbon brushes.

Use a screwdriver to remove

the brush holder caps. Take out the worn carbon brush, insert the new ones and
secure the brush holder caps.

5. Storing the tool :

a. Avoid trip hazard and prevent damage to electrical cord/s.
b. Do not walk on, wheel object over, or drop materials/tools on flexible electrical
cords.
c. Clean bench and work area.
d. Place all waste material in bin.
e. Return angle grinder and rolled up extension leads to storage area.
