The auricular style is one of the most important and remarkable Dutch contributions to the
decorative arts in Europe. This book traces the history and meaning of the auricular style, with its
fabulous, organic shapes, from the work of the goldsmith Paulus van Vianen at the court of
Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, in Prague to that of his brother Adam in Utrecht and Johannes
Lutma in Amsterdam. Their masterpieces were admired as high art by Rembrandt and his pupils,
who produced auricular designs themselves. The story of this abstract decorative form is
illustrated using silver and gold masterworks, design drawings and prints, paintings by
Rembrandt, furnishings, and Cuir de Cordoue gold leather wall coverings.

Although the explosion in popularity of Japanese culture over recent decades has led to the
inclusion of words like "kimono" or "kabuki" in dictionaries, trying to explain these traditions in
English can prove tricky. Even for the Japanese, there are many things that are not actually
understood very well, which can be equally familiar or unfamiliar, or for which the origins and
names are difficult to explain or remember. This richly illustrated book is aimed at those who wish
to introduce Japanese culture in English, including foreigners who want to learn more about
traditional clothing and performing arts. The clear drawings and concise descriptions unlock an
entire universe of Japanese culture.

'Fattobene - Italian Everyday Archetypes' is a project run by Anna Lagorio and Alex Carnevali: an
atlas of Italian material culture, a journey into the industrial history of Italy. The reality of 35
companies that, with their products, have gone through two world wars undeclared, and they
continue to produce with the same detail, care and passion. Archival material - often unpublished
- made of photographs, postcards, prototypes, and advertising posters that tell anecdotes, stories
and curiosities about the best made in Italy. From the object to the packaging, going through
graphic and advertising promotion: in the background, the history of Italy and costumers' taste
during the twentieth century.

Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake was born in Hiroshima and studied graphic design at the
Tama Art University in Tokyo, graduating in 1964. Following that, he spent time in Paris and New
York City before returning to Tokyo in 1970, where he founded the Miyake Design Studio, a high-
end producer of women's fashion. Today he has become the kind of person who makes one
wonder, "What kind of place could he possibly come from?" His creative energy seems like
something from science fiction, perhaps even extraterrestrial. Part biography, part monograph,
this volume dives into Miyake's extraordinary world of design, tracing his roots through the years.

The Japanese world utsuwa literally means "vessel" or "container", and commonly refers to any
kind of cup, plate, dish, or pot. Unlike mass-produced crockery, the spontaneous ceramic form is
momentary and fleeting, with an unparalleled warmth and aesthetic pleasure. This art form
emerges from the particular clay or raw material used, the thickness and flow of the glaze, and
the condition of the kiln. An individual piece depends on the distinct balance between all of these
factors, and each piece is one-of-a-kind; encounters with utsuwa are said to be once-in-a-lifetime
experiences. This book features gorgeously photographed pieces by a selection of specialised
ceramists.
