Teaching Objective: MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMMODATIONS


Given the appropriate materials and instructions, TSW be able to bake brownies with a group, getting all steps
and ingredients correct.
IEP Objective(s):
Students are working towards being independent and able to live on their own after graduation by working on
life skills and problem solving strategies.
TEKS: Working on functional skills.

Background Information:
Students have previously worked on baking skills. Students are also aware of how to use an oven and the egg
beaters. Students are familiar with measuring cups and how to use them.

Materials:
-bowl
-mixing spoon
-measuring cups
-PAM spray
-water
-oil
-eggs
-baking dish

Equipment:
-oven
Classroom Management/Environment:
Students will be gathered around the wooden table. They are expected to all participate in the activity. They are
encouraged to talk amongst their peers as long as it is about baking. They are also expected to actively ask
questions throughout the lesson without yelling.
Engagement/Focus:
Today we are going to be baking brownies. Once everyone looks ready to go we will begin. Just like last week we
need to all be participating and working together, but we’re be extra today for y’all. We’re going to throw in
some tricks here and there so this is why you need to pay close attention to what is going on.
Student Objective: Today you will be able to successfully bake a cake, specifically brownies, by correctly
measuring and mixing all of the ingredients.
Purpose of the Lesson:
This information is important because it will ultimately benefit the students and gives them an opportunity to
work on academic and functional skills. Baking is one of the many life skills a student needs to acquire in order
to live on their own or with support.
Explanation/Procedures:

- Call on Garrett and ask what is the first thing should do when baking brownies? (Pre-heat oven to ____?)
higher temp than box says…ask him to double the box…ask what would happen if temp was too hot
- Go in circle by step…
- Call on student to grease pan
- put mix in bowl
- add vegetable oil..give student opposite measuring spoon of instructions call for to see if paying attention
- add eggs, set 1 more out than needed
- add water – teacher fills up water wrong, checks to see if student knows measurement is wrong – ask
question about adding too much water
- mix together- circle around table – ask what are some ingredients we could to these brownies that would
make them taste even better?
- call on student to go with either teacher to put brownies in the oven.
- other teacher is making students are cleaning up area
Extension:
If the lesson ends early or if time permits, students will make a new batch brownies, but this with less teacher
assistance and adding in a new ingredient.

Elaboration:
Students will use a visual recipe in order to follow the instructions.
Closure:
You all did a great job at following the directions and making sure every ingredient was correct. We will now
put the brownies in the oven and wait patiently for it to bake. Once it is finished we can enjoy the brownies as a
class.
Assessment:
Having the students do different steps on their own will be the assessment. We are assessing that they can do
certain skills on their own.
