Student 1

 On question 1 the student added the two weights together instead of subtracting to find
the difference. In question 2, the student also calculated the problem wrong. In
question 3, the student calculated the problem wrong. Each student solved the problem
the correct way, as in using the right model. However, their computations were
incorrect. However, this shows that the student did not fully understand the model that
he or she used.
 The student was right to use the compare model however the problem was solved
wrong.
 The most important aspect was that the student added instead of subtracted.
 Objective: Given the compare model, the student will be able to solve compare word
problems by accurately subtracting or adding the numbers, depending on the problem.
 Student needs more practice in understanding the relationship between subtraction and
addition
 Reteach the concepts of joining and separating and maybe drawing up those models
could help the student organize the problem.
 Have the student identify what they should do just by reading the problem first before
solving.
 Students need the prerequisite skills of adding and subtracting to understand this
concept
 Students also need the prerequisite skill of understanding the concept of part-part
whole

Student 2
 On question 1, the student found the correct answer, however the student should have
used a change model. Question 2, the student used the correct model and found the
correct answer. Question 3 the student used the correct model and it appears that he or
she understood the problem. However, their calculations were wrong leading to them
getting the incorrect answer.
 The most important aspect of the error on question 3 was that the student didn’t
understand the concept of borrowing.
 Objective: Given the appropriate model, the student will be able to correctly solve the
problem by adding and subtracting the correct way.
 I would go back to the basics and reteach the concept of borrowing to the student. They
understand the problem solving models but are missing basic steps, like borrowing.
 The prerequisite skills that the student needed before completing this problem were
understanding addition and subtraction, within that the student needed to understand
the concept of borrowing and carrying over.
 Academic vocabulary
