The ultimate product range
An unbeatable colour assortment
Different generic types of topcoats provide different customer
benefits and within each generic type a choice of coatings can
further refine the opportunity to achieve the optimum solution.
Jotun has developed a range of topcoats that will meet the
widest spectrum of customer requirements and in an unbeatable
colour assortment.
ACRYLIC
Acrylic can be solvent-borne and water-borne, one-component
and two-component.
One-component acrylic topcoats will normally be produced to suit
a physically drying vinyl or chlorinated rubber coating system or to
be used in a water-borne system.
Two-component acrylic topcoats are usually used in combination
with chemically cured primers and undercoats mostly based on
an epoxy combination. The dry film thickness in both cases will
normally vary between 50 and 75 microns.
ALKYD
‘Alkyd’ is derived from the English word ‘alcid’. This in turn is
derived from the words ‘alcohol’ and ‘acid’ which describe, with
the addition of an oil, the main ingredients in an alkyd. Alkyd
topcoats therefore include many different types depending on the
oil on which they are based.
Alkyd topcoats are usually combined with similar types of
primers and are used in either relatively mild environments or low
corrosivity classes.
Alkyd topcoats are one-component and have limited resistance
to solvents and chemicals. They are easy to use, simple to
apply and give a high gloss finish with relatively good weather
resistance and gloss retention.
EPOXY
Two-component epoxy topcoats provide excellent resistance
against chemicals, solvents and water as well as mechanical
impact. They are widely used in severe corrosion environments
such as offshore oil platforms, structural steel in refineries and the
interior and exterior of tanks.
The glossy surface makes them ideal for water tanks and other
immersed structures as well as the food industry. However,
resistance to UV light is limited. They have very good alkali
resistance and are widely used on concrete.

POLYURETHANE
Two-component, aliphatic polyurethane topcoats provide a
glossy finish with excellent weather resistance and very good gloss
and colour retention – better than most other topcoats.
They are normally used over an epoxy based primer system on
steel structures where there is aggressive atmospheric exposure.
They are resistant to a number of solvents and various chemicals,
have good application properties and cure at relatively low
temperatures.
Jotun’s polyurethane topcoats are amongst the most versatile.
They fill a vital niche for high performance application on steel
and other metals, concrete and plastics.
WATER-BORNE ACRYLIC
Environment legislation on VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
is coming into force in several parts of the world including
Australia, the EU, Switzerland and the USA. This has resulted in
an increased demand for low VOC content coatings. These include
water-borne coatings which use water as the main thinner.
With very low content of harmful cosolvent they are better for
health, being non-flammable they are safer and there is no risk
of explosion, with favourable VOC – and HAP (Hazardous Air
Pollutant) values they are better for the environment and they are
better for the applicator.
FLOOR COATINGS
Concrete floors require protection from attack by chemicals,
contamination from spillage, impact, abrasion and a host of other
potentially damaging criteria.
The Jotafloor range of floor coatings, designed to protect and
extend the life of floors, includes topcoats that deliver unsurpassed
aesthetic effects in the widest possible colour choice through Jotun
Multicolor Industry. These products combine Jotun’s vast global
experience with the most advanced coatings technology.
ACRYLIC

Jotaproof Topcoat A two-component, high-gloss, state of the art acrylic topcoat suitable for use under aggressive, atmospheric
exposure conditions. Excellent gloss retention and weather resistance. Cures at relatively low temperatures.
Normally used in combination with an epoxy primer system. Glossy 5L / 20L

Conseal Touch-Up One-component. Quick drying. Semi gloss appearance. For steel structures and is ideal for the
protection of steel members used in civil building projects. Semi-gloss 5L / 20L

Pioner Topcoat One-component. Suitable for use on external steel structures which are subject to atmospheric exposure.
It dries by evaporation of the solvents, it can be used at low temperature and is permanently re-soluble.
Provides very good adhesion when overcoated with corresponding types of paint. Glossy 5L / 20L

ALKYD

Correx One-component. A semi-gloss topcoat based on a silicone alkyd. Extremely good weather resistance.
Maintains its gloss and colour over a very long time. More than 25 years documented exposure.
Correx is an excellent choice for sheathing on large building complexes. Semi-gloss 5L / 20L

Mammut Topcoat One-component. Based on a modified urethane alkyd. Suitable where high build application is required for
external atmospheric exposure. It is usually combined with Mammut Primer. Glossy 5L / 20L

Pilot II A one-component, glossy alkyd based topcoat in a traditional alkyd system. It has good gloss retention and
weather resistance. It can also be used on woodwork. Glossy 5L / 20L

EPOXY

Penguard Topcoat Two-component. Based on a polyamide cured epoxy resin. Being resistant to a variety of solvents and
chemicals it can be used on all areas both on steel and concrete. It may be used in tanks for potable
water and is part of a complete system which is certified not to spread surface flames. Glossy 5L / 20L

Penguard FC Two-component, high build, polyamide cured epoxy finish coat to be used when cosmetic appearance
of an epoxy finish is acceptable. Semi gloss 5L / 20L

POLYURETHANE
