Teaching parents to work with their
children at home

Project Change

Many challenges faced by parents

ABA training provided over time

Many parents were motivated and

successful in changing their child’s behavior
 Making contingency contracting
directly accessible to families

My question: Can ABA interventions be made available

to families not involved in a structured program like
Project Change?

Could a children’s book teach a family an established

ABA intervention? How about contingency contracting?

that.

Mike Kabler (1976) - used Sign Here to teach self-
management skills to three classes of fourth grade students

Jim Norman (1977) - parents of children with behavioral

disorders used Sign Here to develop contracts that greatly
reduced disruptions in the home

Robert Shrewsberry (1977) - 59 families wrote and

implemented a total of 154 contracts during a 6-week period.
The parents judged 138 (90%) of those contracts successful

 Contracting Rules
Rule 1: The contract should be written.
Rule 2: The contract must be specific.
Rule 3: The contract should be positive.
Rule 4: The contract must be fair.
Rule 5: The reward should be immediate.
Rule 6: The contract must be honest.
Rule 7: Change the contract when you need to.
