The Voice (Voice quality)

-the sound produced using the vocal organs, especially the sound used in speech.
1. Pitch – the highness or lowness of your voice (sound).
2. Rate – the speed/tempo
3. Volume/intensity – loudness of a sound
Changes depending on one person’s mood. Voice qualities are also used to determine accents. 
Voice quality can refer to any of the suprasegmental (accompanying pronunciation of speech sounds)
properties of speech that result from how your vocal apparatus is configured. Voice Quality
Types Voice Quality • breathy voice (words accompanied with air) creaky voice (short high pitch
sound) falsetto voice (very high sound) Full voice/ loud voice (close to shouting) Normal voice
(normally used in conversations) Thin voice (shallow voice with

1. 1. Voice Quality Development Personality Development Skills
2. 2. Parameters of Quality Voice Quality Voice Pitch Speed Pause Modulation
3. 3. 1.What is Pitch? • Voice Level or Volume • Low Pitch represents lack of confidence. • High
Pitch Represents over confidence. • An effective pitch should be loud and clear.
4. 4. To develop a right pitch- • A person speaking in low pitch must practice reading Loudly
and • A person speaking in a high pitch must practice reading in a normal volume.
5. 5. 2. Speed • In voice quality speed refers to words per minute. • There are the speakers
who- • Speaks very fast • Speaks very slow • Fast speakers makes difficult for listeners to
understand the speaker. • Where as slow speakers becomes irritants.
6. 6. To Develop a quality Speed- • For Fast Speakers- They should practice reading in a slow
speed i.e. they should read 2 words in a space of 5 seconds. • For Slow Speakers- They
should practice reading about 100 words per minute.
7. 7. 3.Pause • It means taking appropriate breaks after certain words and sentences, which
makes the listeners to gather the thoughts and to create an idea of the speaker’s mind. • To
develop right pause the speaker must practice reading paragraphs with appropriate pauses
and tags and narrations.
8. 8. 4. Voice Modulation • It is the Variation in voice. • Take is sentence- This is my watch. •
Now speak this sentence with stress in different words each time- • This is my watch. • This
IS MY watch. (shows authority) • This is MY watch. (shows possession)
9. 9. To Develop Modulation in Voice • Read a paragraph. • Select some words to stress on. •
Read the same paragraph again.

Phonation types and the glottal flow signal.

It has already been mentioned that the phonation type strongly influences the
properties of a generated sound. The differences are caused by a change in the
excitation pulse. Thus, the glottal waveform is different for every individual
phonation type.

Its specific characteristics depending on the respective phonation

type are described in comparison to modal phonation, taking over
the approach of Ní Chasaide and Gobl (1997), Stevens (1994), Trask
(1996) and Zemlin (1988):
 breathy voice:
o the fall phase is longer and the flow cut is more
gradual
o the glottal pulse is more symmetrical
o high Open Quotient
o high peak flow glottal
o lower pitch
 whispery voice:
o high OQ, but lower than for breathy voice
o pulses more skewed than for breathy voice, but
more symmetrical than for normal voice
o a high peak glottal flow, but lower than for breathy
voice, which implies that H1 is lower in the source spectrum
 creaky voice:
o extremely low fundamental frequency
o irregular pulses
o low OQ and low glottal flow rate, resulting in
weaker low frequency components, particularly H1
o impulses are relatively symmetrical, with a relatively short rise time
which dampens the low frequency components;
 falsetto:
o very high pitch
o rather low glottal peak flow
o often with glottis slightly open, thus, the effect of turbulent
flow is observed in the spectrum
o pulses quite symmetrical.
 tense voice:
o sharp cuting off of the glottal flow, boosting the higher spectrum
components, very high skewness of the glottal pulse following a longer
rise time
o small Open Quotient
o low frequency components of spectrum attenuated in comparison to
the higher components
 lax voice:
o comparable to breathy voice
o long rise time of the glottal pulse
REVERSE CREATION
by Bernard Backman

In the end, we destroyed the heaven that was called Earth. The Earth had been beautiful
until our spirit moved over it and destroyed all things.

And we said...

Let there be darkness... and there was darkness. And we liked the darkness; so we called
the darkness, Security. And we divided ourselves into races and religions and classes of
society. And there was no morning and no evening on the seventh day before the end.

And we said...

Let there be a strong government to control us in our darkness. Let there be armies to
control our bodies so that we may learn to kill one another neatly and efficiently in our
darkness. And there was no evening and no morning on the sixth day before the end.

And we said...

Let there be rockets and bombs to kill faster and easier; let there be gas chambers and
furnaces to be more thorough. And there was no evening and no morning on the fifth
day before the end.

And we said...

Let there be drugs and other forms of escape, for there is this constant annoyance -
Reality - which is disturbing our comfort. And there was no evening and no morning on
the fourth day before the end.

And we said...

Let there be divisions among the nations, so that we may know who is our common
enemy. And there was no evening and no morning on the third day before the end.

And finally we said...

Let us create God in our image. Let some other God compete with us. Let us say that
God thinks as we think, hates as we hate, and kills as we kill. And there was no morning
and no evening on the second day before the end.

On the last day, there was a great noise on the face of the Earth. Fire consumed the
beautiful globe, and there was silence. The blackened Earth now rested to worship the
one true God; and God saw all that we had done, and in the silence over the smoldering
ruins... God wept.
