Reactions to stress are manifold. No one situation is stressful to all the people all the
time. Some of the factors that can produce stress are children or the lack of them, the boss
or the subordinate, the traffic, the telephone or the lack of it, overwork or not enough to
do, too much money or too little of it, overwork or not enough routine job, lack of
authority and apprehensions about the future.
Thus Ayurveda considered a balance state of mana, atman and buddhi to getting total
health. If one has not the balance state of these two, besides the balance of all other
factor, can't having total health. He may be a diseased person of mental disorders like
"stress". In Ayurveda, stress has been laid on the psychosomatic approach in the
management of various mental disorders. Charaka describes that life denotes the samyoga
(annexation) of sharira (physical body) indriya (conative and cognitive organs), satva
(mind) and atman (soul). Further he adds that sharira is influenced be manas and likewise
manas by sharira. Similarly, physical and mental disorders may interchangeable. All
these highlight the holistic approach of Ayurveda.

Excess weight of muscles, bone, fat and water in the body is Overweight. Ayurveda
describes that under normal conditions the body fat keeps the body moisturized, promotes
sweating, provides energy to the body by storing energy and nourishes the bones by
protecting them from shock. Fat gets deposited in and around the belly in all living
beings. It is also present in bone. Hence when a person becomes obese his stomach
bulges out.
Obesity can be caused by consuming more calories than he burns up. Obesity tends to run
in families. If parents are fat then the offspring also show a tendency to accumulate fat.
Even the diet and lifestyle habits which are practiced in the family contribute to obesity.
Eating habits and level of physical activities can also contribute to an excess deposition
of fat. There is a tendency to overeat in response to negative emotions like boredom,
sadness or anger. This leads to obesity. Diseases and conditions like Hypothyroidism,
Cushing's syndrome, Depression, and certain neurological problems lead to overeating
which in turn leads to accumulation of fat. Medicines such as steroids and some
antidepressants may cause weight gain. Obesity helps in originating various killer
disorders so it should be treating immediately.
In Ayurveda the causes of obesity are defined as not exerting physically, sleeping in the
afternoon, consuming sweet foods, the diet and life styles which cause an increase in the
dosha Kapha. According to Ayurveda the obese persons are more prone to diabetes,
kidney related problems, hepatitis, low libido, low energy levels, skin problems, fistula,
piles, filariasis etc.
Numerous tips to reduce obesity have been advised in Ayurveda. 1. Exercise like brisk
walking, jogging, playing out door games etc help to reduce weight. 2. Physical exertion
like doing housework, walking to bring groceries, vegetables etc, walking long distances
to collect your child from school, walking to work, climbing stairs. Exerting physically as
much as you can, helps to burn more calories. 3. Mental exertion like worrying or being
involved in finding solutions to problems also restricts food consumption in some and
thereby can reduce the intake of calories. 4. Having sex frequently is also good physical
output. 5. Consumption of honey. This is advisable for non diabetic patients. 6.
Consuming 2 tea spoons of honey with a glass of herbal tea which includes weight
reducing herbs helps a lot in weight reduction. Honey along with these herbs dissolves
the Kapha and medha (body fat). 7. Sleeping for less hours. Avoiding sleeping in
afternoons helps to increase the burning of calories. This avoids the slowing of the basal
metabolic rate. 8. Avoiding food and beverages which increase Kapha and medha. The
foods which increase Kapha and medha are sweets, sweetened drinks, large quantities of
carbohydrates and oily food. 9. Consuming wheat products more than rice products helps
to reduce obesity. Using Green gram and horse gram helps in reduction of Kapha and
meda.
