Hydrolysis of Hydrogen Peroxide

OBJECTIVES:

1. Find constant of rate

2. Determine the order of reaction
3. Find a half-life t1/2

INTRODUCTION:

The chemical reaction speed depended on several factors,

including the Concentration of the reactants and the temperature
and the presence of the catalyst dependsplay Article stimulating
a major role in increasing the rate of reaction in this case it
Dissociation hydrogen peroxide as the following equation:
H2O2 ⇋ 2H2O + O2
It is possible to increase the speed of interaction by adding
manganese dioxide MnO2 as a catalyst in this case can follow
the progress of the reaction to finding the concentration of
hydrogen peroxide remaining Titrate with the standard solution
of Potassium permanganate KMnO4 the midst of an acid
5H2O2 + 2KMnO4 + 3H2SO4 →2MnSO4 +K2SO4+8H2O+5O2

Dissociation hydrogen peroxide by manganese dioxide is one of

the first order reactions following
dx/dt =k[a-x]……. (1)
a= the concentration of hydrogen peroxide at when the t =o
x= the amount of hydrogen peroxide Dissociation when the
time=t
a-x= The amount of hydrogen peroxide non-reactive
[remining]= volume of KMnO4 From burrte
Procedure
1. Prepare [100] ml from [0. 2N] of KMnO4 and [100] ml of %1
H2O2 and [100] ml from 2N H2SO4

2. Take 10 ml from of %1 H2O2 by Pipette and placed in a

conical containing10 ml mls from 2N H2SO4 and then titrate
with KMnO4 To get the value of a primary concentration [a]

3. Weight 0. 03 g of manganese dioxide and then add it to 50mL

of H2O2the solution and must register record time

4. After five minutes Move solution then pull [10] ml of mixture

and put it in the Erlenmeyer flask to [10] ml Other from 2N
H2SO4 And then titrate with KMnO4until constant yellow or
Brown colour To get the value of [a-x]That the entire process
takes the shortest possible time

Repeat the previous step at [10, 20, and 30]

Discussion:

We add the acid H2SO4 to the reaction so that H2O

Does not react with KMnO4 if we don’t add H2SO4
water will react with KMnO4 and form MnO2

Our experiment in the lab failed we did all the steps as in the
procedure and we kept titrating but the color did not
changed to yellow or Brown so we could not get the value
of [a-x] the reason we failed is because we used KMnO
instead of KMnO4 . The order of the reaction is first order
reactions we could prof that by drawing the slop of the
reaction but we cannot because we don’t have the value of
[a-x] and the other value and we also cannot fined K so we
cannot compare it as request it.
