Refer to Figure E27.43 in the textbook.

(a)

To identify: which axis will the coil begin to rotate.

To explain: The reasons for axis will the coil begin to rotate.

Solution: The A2 axes will the coil begin to rotate. The reason is only torque is along
top and the bottom sides of the coil.

Explanation:

Consider the formula for the torque   .

  B …… (I)

Consider the uniform magnetic field B in the positive y-direction, therefore the direction
of B is ĵ .

Here, the magnetic field B and the magnetic moment  are in parallel, so the parallel
vectors are the null vector in Figure E27.43.
From equation (I), the direction of the torque is 0 .

The magnetic field B and the magnetic moment  are in parallel. The coil rotates about
its axis A2 because the only torque is along top and the bottom sides of the coil.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the A2 axes will the coil begin to rotate. The reason is only torque is along
top and the bottom sides of the coil.

(b)

To determine: the initial angular acceleration of the coil.

rad
Solution: The initial angular acceleration of the coil   is 290 .

Explanation:

To calculate the coil’s moment of inertia, treat the two 0.5 m segments as thin uniform
bars, which are rotating about their centers and the two 1 m segments as point-masses.
The each segment’s mass is directly proportional to its fraction of the perimeter of coil
since the coil is uniform.
Each 1 m segment is 1 by third of the total perimeter, therefore its mass is

   210 g   70 g that is equal to 0.07 kg. The mass of each 0.500-m segment is half

this amount or 0.035 kg.

Consider the equation for the moment of inertia of the coil.

Consider the formula for the magnitude of the torque   .

   B sin  …… (II)
  is the magnitude of the magnetic moment,
 B is the magnetic field,
  is the angle.

Consider the formula for the magnitude of the magnetic moment    .

  NIA …… (III)
 N is the number of turns,
 I is the loop current,
 A is the Area of the coil.

Substitute equations (III) in equation (II),

   NIA B sin 
  NIAB sin  …… (IV)

Consider the formula for the initial angular acceleration of the coil   .

 …… (V)
moment of inertia of the coil

Substitute 1 for N , 2.00 A for I , 0.500 m 1.00 m for A , 3.00 T for B , and 90 for 
in equation (IV),
  1 2.00 A  0.500 m 1.00 m 3.00T  sin 90
 3.00 N  m
Substitute 0.0102 kg  m2 for moment of inertia of the coil , and 3.00 N  m for  in
equation (V),
