Summary of Findings for Four Points by Sheraton

The building has been analyzed in ETABS for statics and dynamic loads cases, the following loads were
considered:

Dead Load: Concrete own weight (slabs, walls, beams, columns, etc.)

Super Imposed Dead Load: 1.3 kPa (this includes all furniture, partitions, m/e)

Live load: 1.9 kPa (for upper floors), 4.8 kPa for main floor

Snow Load: 1.9 kPa (Niagara Falls, ON)

Wind: Auto generated wind pressures for q50= 0.43 (wind loads were generated for 8 directions; +ve X, -
ve X, +ve Y, -ve Y, XY (45), XY (135), XY (225) and XY (315)). This should be a conservative approach until
we receive the wind tunnel testing results.

Seismic: Using equivalent shear force method and response spectrum for both X and Y directions

Summary of Findings (Original M.A.Steelcon Design):

According to the wall sizes and slab thickness provided for the addition on drawings dated April 2008:

1- The following pad footings were found to be overstressed:

a. FN-4 for CN-6 on GL Lx & I (due to the extent of the eccentricity of the column location
within the footing), this addition will induce an SLS pressure of 900 kPa and ULS
Pressure of 1200 kPa. (see Picture #1 for service loads bearing soil pressure)
b. FN-5 for CN-6 on GL h&Kx, FN-4 for CN-3 on GL Jy & I, FN-4 for CN-3 on GL Jx&I, FN-5 for
CN-3 on GL Jx&h are all overstressed by 10% of the UPGRADED bearing capacity of 600
kPa SLS and 900 kPa ULS
c. Partial 1800 thick mat footing is overstressed, were the max SLS soil pressure under the
applied load conditions noted above was found to be 1064 kPa. (see picture #2 for SLS
bearing soil pressure)
d. Partial 2000 thick mat footing is overstressed, were the max SLS soil pressure under the
applied load conditions noted above was found to be 1100 kPa. (see picture #3 for SLS
bearing soil pressure)

Summary of Findings (Reduced Design Loads):

We have also analyzed the building with the following changes:

1- Reduced the live load on the upper floor, as per the NBCC and OBC. Original drawings do not
show any live load reductions. Loads reduced from 1.9 kPa to 0.86 kPa.
2- Reduced the live load in the corridors to 1.9 kPa, and then reduced it as noted above. Original
design considered live load for corridors was 4.8 kPa. ( first floor loads remained the same as 4.8
kPa)
3- We have changed the wall sizes for the new addition: from 11-20> 250 thick walls and then from
21-roof > 200 thick walls. this have reduced the dead load on the footings
4- We have also analyzed the suspended slab and we can reduce most (not all) from 225 to 200
thick, this will result in reduction to the dead loads on the footings

After taking all the above into consideration, the bearing pressure for the above noted footing was
calculated and summarized below:

1- Most of the pad footing will be within 90% of the allowable bearing pressure SLS
2- FN-4 for CN-6 on GL Lx & I (due to the extent of the eccentricity of the column location within
the footing), will induce an SLS pressure of 814 kPa and ULS Pressure of 1034 kPa. (see Picture
#4 for service loads bearing soil pressure)
3- Partial 1800 thick mat footing was still to be overstressed, were the max SLS soil pressure under
the applied load conditions noted above was found to be 675 kPa. (see picture #5 for SLS
bearing soil pressure).
4- Partial 2000 thick mat footing was still overstressed even with reduced loads, were the max SLS
soil pressure under the applied load conditions noted above was found to be 800 kPa. (see
picture #6 for SLS bearing soil pressure)
