Introduction (How will you engage and motivate the students?)
- Students will get into pairs to tell the story about when they started developing
language (or the story behind their name, if they can’t remember)
15 MIN o The purpose of this activity is to have students start thinking about the process
of developing language and the similarities and differences of how individuals
are socialized
o Each partner will have five minutes to speak
Lesson Steps (Describe the sequence of the lesson.)
- Then will begin the lesson of the language development in young children
- Stage 1 – describe age group, the main characteristics of this stage (i.e. babbling), and
show the video of babbling twins
- Stage 2 – describe age group, the main characteristics of this stage (i.e. telegraphic
sentences) and show the video of the interview with a two-year old
50 MIN - Stage 3 – describe age group, the main characteristics of this stage (i.e.
overgeneralizations) and show the video four-year old storytelling
- Discuss that children with significant hearing loss go through these stages as well
o Watch videos of children with significant hearing loss go through the three
stages with sign language – baby, 2-year old, 4-year old
o Watch motivational speaker Drisana Levitzke-Gray speak about the benefits of
sign language for children with significant hearing loss
o After, discuss why I showed this video – to alter perspectives and biases that
has for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, to deconstruct disability and
change it to differently abled, and to show that sign language is a language
Conclusion (How will you wrap-up the lesson?)
10 MIN - After discussion, will handout an Exit Card for students to complete – what I know,
what I want to know, and what I learned
