g Calculate the current in each resistor and the battery.

h Calculate the potential difference across each resistor.

What do we call this arrangement? State a use for this circuit.

13 An electric kettle is designed to be operated from a 240 V mains supply. When switched on,
a current of 6 A flows in the kettle.
a Calculate the power rating of the kettle.

b Calculate the resistance of the heater element.

c Suggest a rating for the fuse that should be used with the kettle.

d When the kettle is operating normally, what current is flowing in:

i the live wire?

ii the neutral wire?

iii the earth wire?

e If this kettle is used three times a day, for 7 minutes each time, and the cost of an electrical unit
is 10 cents, calculate the cost of using this kettle from 1 January to 31 March, during a leap year.
