Example 2 - Gates

Design of the Controller Steel Gates

If the width of vents of a regulator is 6.0m and maximum height of water upstream gates is
4.00m, the following are required to design roller steel gates:-
1. Determine the type of the used gates.
2. Determine section modulus (Z) of steel beams of gate, (consider the lower channel beam).
3. Show by a sketch how the water pressure is divided equally on the steel beams of gate.
4. Determine the lifting force of the steel gate (own weight of gate 150 kg/m2, µ1= 0.15cm,
µ2 =0.20, d = 5cm, D=25cm).

1- Determining the type of gate

d = 4.0m
S = 6.0m
Assume single gate
Hg = d+0.30 = 4.30m
Lg = S+0.30 = 6.30m
Ag = 4.30*6.30 = 27.09 > 16m2 Use double –gate

2-design of the I-beam

4 + 0.5
hg = = 2.25m
2

Average Water Pressure on the lower gate, p = γ w (0.75 *d) hg

R R t/m
p = γ w (0.75 *4) 2.25 = 6.75 t/m
R R

Take (4-I beams) and consider the lower channel

p 6.75
pressur .on each I − beam = w = = = 1.50 t/m
n + 0.5 4.5
1.5(6.30) 2
M= = 7.44 t.m

M 7.44 * 100
Z= = = 620cm 3
f t t/em 2 1.20

3- Distribution of I-beams

4- Lifting force (T)

For roller gates, the lifting force (T),
F
T = G + (μ 1 + μ 2 r)
R
- μ 1 = 0.15 cm,
R R μ 2 = 0.20,
R R r = 2.50cm, R=12.50cm

G= γ g (hg * Lg )
R R tons (own-weight of gate)
G= 0.150 (2.25*6.30 ) = 2.13 tons

F= γ w (0.75 *d) hg * Lg
R R tons (total water pressure on the lower gate)

F= γ w (0.75 * 4)*2.25*6.30 = 42.525 tons

R R

42.525
T = 2.13 + (0.15 + 0.20 * 2.5) = 4.34 tons
